Trinity or URichmond?

undecided about a major, trinity is much closer, received about 10k more from richmond though. money aside, which is better?

Money and proximity aside, I would say academically Trinity is more respected. Trinity was #42 in the WSJ feeder school rankings, while I can't imagine Richmond is anywhere near that.

I made the same decision last year, choosing Trinity over Richmond.

Socially, the schools are very much the same. However, much more of Trinity's population is New England prep school-bred (60% private) while Richmond is about 35%. Richmond, while a Southern school, has a predominantly Northeastern student body. The only differences are off-campus. As far as Greek life goes, Richmond is big on frats and sororities (30 and 50% enrollment respectively) while Trinity is statistically less involved. With that said, much of Trinity social life does revolve around frats and drinking, you're just less likely to know a brother.

Richmond is 1000 people bigger. Would you rather have the D1 sports and the larger campus, or smaller classes and easier registration? With size comes opportunity, but also slightly larger classes and prof:student ratios. The ability to watch big-time sports was big for me, and Trinity doesn't have them, but the activities I've joined I've become a big part of.

In the past, Richmond has been much more of a bargain, but tuition has risen 25% over the past year. Regardless, that 10K merit looks pretty good if money is a factor.

Other things to consider:
-Is the flight to Richmond much longer than the drive to Trinity?
-The city of Richmond is dead, while the city of Hartford is dangerous, but has slightly more culturally. Which do you prefer?
-Warm campus or cold campus?
-How do you feel about single-sex dorms (a la Richmond)?
-Large campus (Richmond) or small campus (Trinity)?

Trinity is in the midst of some budget trouble (not overwhelmingly so, however) and some programs are getting cut. Richmond, on the other hand, has a lot of funding for a school of its size.

As far as prestige, Trinity is regarded as slightly better, while Richmond is below, but steadily rising. Hopefully this isn't the basis of your decision, but I know that was part of Trinity's appeal for me at first.

You can't lose at this point. They're largely the same school socially and academically. Think about extra-curriculars and campus life, as well as the money, and you'll turn out okay.

I just turned down Richmond over Trinity or Colgate. Still undecided. Richmond seemed too much of a party/jock school. I love sports and compete and hope to compete at Trinity. Probably not good enough for Colgate, but Colgate has prestige and great programs for me. I sat in on a class on Realize Richmond Day and the kids were all checking cell phones, talking about being wasted and laughing in class. My experience at Trinity was 180 degees different. The classroom was so intense I was afraid to sneeze!

That's the kind of post that helps us get some sense of the academics at any given school. Thanks for sharing!

The other thing I noticed was that the other accepted students were all considering schools that I didn't even consider applying to. Just not at all competitive academically. I started thinking that these would be my classmates and they were uninspiring. The accepted students at Trinity were interesting and I made friends after the first class that I sat in on. The UR accepteds were somewhat boring and I did not want to be with them. Sounds dumb but those were my feelings.

What about Trinity vs. Emory?

yes, anyone with an opinion of trinity vs. emory would be very helpful. i was wondering the same thing.

Trinity is going through a budget crisis, trust me, the kids are living in Dorms next to neighborhood people dealing with slum lords, I wouldnt' recommend it.

Try URichmond, the atmosphere is better, better ambience, Hartford is no college town meaning that alot of criminal activity is happening and Trinity is surrounded by sex-offenders

My goodness your posts are negative. Are you a student there now? Most of the dorms were fine. Yes, Hartford is next door but have you ever been to Penn or Columbia or Yale. Budget problems at colleges are also nothing new. The school remains one of the top colleges in the country and its campus, atmosphere, students and teachers compare favorably to almost any other college around.

Bichaso- look at my other posts in the trinity forum regarding campus safety- i dont want to re-type them here.
