Trinity University vs. Rice

I am currently accepted by Trinity and will find out about Rice by the end of this month. Originally I bounced back and forth about whether or not I should ED to Rice. I finally decided not to. That being said, if I was to get in regular decision I would consider attending. I am highly interested in entering the medical field (hopefully to become a surgeon) and have aspirations to attend a Texas medical school. I’m not 100% confident I want to become a surgeon though because I still have interests in business. I have heard that Trinity is better at preparing people for medical school and is less of a competitive environment than Rice (which is what prompted me not to apply early decision). Is this true, or do any of you have any advice or further knowledge? This is my first post here and I am curious to ask what you all think.
Thank you

Trinity in CT or in San Anton? IMO RIce is a MUCH better school.

the only reasons i can think of someone turning down rice for trinity are cost and fit. rice is obviously doing something correct since it has an 88% medical school acceptance rate. like every top university, it will be competitive, but the residential college system establishes and fosters a great community of people. rice is truly underrated by many, many people. if you’re given the opportunity to attend, take it.

Trinity in San Antonio

Completely agree with the above. Go to Rice!!

In general I agree with @kalons. However, I’d caution the OP to look at the details behind any medical school acceptance rates. It may sound obvious, but it is very important to understand exactly what goes into the numerator and denominator of the ratio as not all schools calculate med school acceptance rate in the same manner (and I don’t know how Rice does it). For example:

–Some schools have more “weed out” classes than others reducing the number of students who continue on the pre-med path for four years (lowering the denominator).

–Certain colleges have committees which pre-screen and recommend med school applicants. These committees generally only recommend students who have the stats, experiences etc. to make them very strong candidates for med schools. Students who are not recommended are left out of the equation. In contrast, other colleges support all of the students who want to apply to med school. So while the schools with the pre-screening will have a higher acceptance rate (because of the lower denominator), a schools that support all students may prove to be preferable in some situations.

–It is important to know what constitutes a med school acceptance for the med school acceptance rate. Some colleges just count US allopathic med school acceptances and other schools include acceptances to DO, overseas, podiatry etc. programs in the numerator leading to a higher med school acceptance rate.

@happy1 is very right. lots of factors to look into.
also, op, if it helps, rice is known for its STEM departments.

Alright, well hopefully I get in. (should have done ED when I had the chance) but thank you for the help

They are both great choices - probably the best two schools in Texas - but different. Rice is a large research university with lots of graduate programs, D1 sports, etc. similar to a Harvard. Trinity is a small liberal arts college like Williams, Pomona etc. I’d think their medical school acceptance %s are nearly identical. It depends on what type of environment you prefer for your undergraduate experience. If you’re planning to go to medical school might not be a bad choice to go to a smaller environment first and then the larger program for grad school. UT Austin Rice and Trinity impress me the most in TX.
