Triple Major

Hello!
So recently, I have been messing around with the idea of triple majoring in Criminal Justice, Psychology, and Social Work. I want to know how bad/good of an idea it is, as a lot of the courses overlap or can be used as electives. I want to be a Criminal Psychologist once I graduate but also find the idea of having a private group practice in a social work setting where I will be able to give counseling to those affected by the CJ system (incarcerated family, sexual assault, domestic violence, etc.). I feel as if these majors go very well together, but would like the a few opinions from others as my advisor has not been very helpful thus far and so want to know if what I am doing is even worth it (as I currently am a freshman and am not very educated on the topic). I know that I will likely not graduate in four years, and that is okay with me. In addition to this, I brought 12 credits in with me from dual enrollment during high school and currently only have 5 CJ courses left to take for the CJ requirements in addition to the few university requirements that I have left. I go to Michigan state University (I’m not sure if that changes anything, though). I’m just really looking for opinions/advice. Thanks!

Focus on transferring to a better college rather than waste your time on three majors.

Perhaps focusing on completing your Criminal Justice and Psychology requirements first before declaring a third major would be helpful. I don’t really see the need for 3 majors, especially since all the majors are in the social science/liberal arts area. If you really want to explore the 3 subject areas, consider choosing one of them as a minor instead.

This issue is that none of them are offered as a minor.

Have you considered maybe doing two of those majors the get a masters or Ph.D. in the other? Like double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology the getting a post-graduate degree in Social Work.

Yeah, I don’t think having three majors is a good use of your time.

  1. At some point, everyone has to make a decision about what career they are going to pursue. That doesn’t mean you can never change careers, but it also means you can’t keep every door open indefinitely. There’s nothing preventing you from doing private group practice in a social work setting if you just double major in criminal justice and psychology - in fact, in order to do that you’d need an MSW at least anyway, and you don’t need a social work undergrad major to do an MSW.

  2. You don’t have to double major in any of those things. You can major in social work and take clases in the other two fields; or you could major in psychology and minor in criminal justice; or some other combination.
