Hi I was wondering if writing about my transition from a foreign country to a new country (learning to adapt, learning English, etc) is too trite for college essays?

I don't believe it would be if done well. Good luck!

Depends how you write it and what the word "trite" means, but yeah I'll go with "No"

There are no trite topics.

There are only trite treatments of topics.

So say if I write about me moving to US at age 10, learning English, coping with cultural conflicts, learning to adapt, getting out of ESL, etc but with a personal yet sophisticated language, it'll be good?

yawnyawn ive heard that story 124 times and i dont even read essays for a living. seriously they could care less about your hardships (ignore my post above)

i agree with nobromo, yea really, it is a trite topic.. yea maybe if you are superduper exceptional, then maybe you could really pull it off, but really.. u have noo idea how many ppl write that.. i moved here 2 years ago, just for college, and im not even writing about that.. i may mention it in passing, but not something i base my essays on.. :)
the us has so many immigrants anyway and many of them wanna go to college, and decide that they wanna write the same thing..
trust me, its like the whole 'why do u wanna go to med school?' 'because i wanna help people'.... :p sure its true, but thats not enough, just like movign here is a part of you, but its not special enough.. :)

I've read some cliche essays about moving here and I've read some wonderful, personal, detailed essays about moving here.

It's not the topic; it's what you do with the topic.

Choose the topic that allows you to write the most personal, detailed, honest and revealing essay.

well yea ofc, if youre a great writer and consider yourself to be able to do something extreme good with that essay then sure go ahead.. i dont know your story so i cant tell if its gonna be different from the others.. but well, personally, i wouldnt write about that.. maybe somehow write about adjusting and the way people learn to adjust to situations and include more things, and then also mention your own experience.. or something like that if youve made up your mind that ur gonna write about that :)
just trying to help and help you set yourself apart from the rest :)

I think it really depends on how your message is delivered. The topic itself is a little sappy, but then again, so are most topics. Just be candid and careful in your execution.
