Trojan Engineering

How are the engineering programs at USC? Are they as demanding and highly sought after by the major companies as other schools like Michigan and or CMU or UC-Berkeley? I am especially interested in Aerospace Engineering. I am thinking about coming to USC on a basketball scholarship. A guy named Jeremy Barr was in the same basketball program I'm in and he goes to USC now.

USC was ranked #7 as one of the best engineering schools in the country. Overall, USC is really good in terms of networking with major companies because of our famed "Trojan Family".

Aerospace is even better because there are tons of aerospace companies in the LA area (JPL, Raytheon, Boeing, Northrup Grumann), and they all come to USC at least once a semester to recruit students for jobs and internships.

Please come to USC and play basketball. Tim Floyd needs all the help he can get next year...

Engineering at USC is excellent. You should think carefully about aerospace engineering since this field is more volatile for employment than the more traditional engineering disciplines like chemical, mechanical, civil, or electrical.

But that having been said, it's a very, very good program at USC. My son decided against CMU and is leaning to USC for engineering if we can arrange the money side of the story. I am also a USC engineering grad myself. Berkeley and Michigan are both ranked a little higher than USC (and are both excellent schools) but have completely different characters as places to learn. Within the top ten schools, I think the character of the college is more important than the actual ranking (except for MIT and CalTech, which provide a world of their own, IMHO).

I'm sure you already know that it's hard to be a college athlete and to take a tough curriculum like engineering. If you plan to complete a BS in five years, the extra year can really help. Will you arrive with any college credits from community college, AP, or something? I think if I were in your shoes (athlete in engineering) I would want to know if the college will help with tutoring, summer classes, or other assistance.

Dude, I love aerospace engineering too. This new information makes me want to go to USC even more.

We're gonna have Galen next season! Come play for 'SC! Oh yeah, our academics (especially engineering) are pretty good too...!

Viterbi is definitely eyed by top recruiters. If you had seen our recent job fair, then you would know what I mean. We had recruiters from every top company imaginable, from Microsoft and IBM to Activision and EA (for all you game freaks). And it should get better over the next few years.

The engineering department is awesome, professors, staff and all. I just wish I had more classes in it, cuz the College really annoys me.

I'm going to college in two years. I got put back because I'm transfering from the Bahamas to the US. I'm going to Episcopal high school in houston in the fall. How volatile is aerospace engineering and why should I look at the other fields of engineering if this is my main interest? Job security is one thinng but I would probably fell better doing something I have been planning on doing for years.

redski59: by the College do you mean, College of Letters, Arts and Sciences? Why does this College annoy you?

Yeah... College of Letters, Arts and Sciences is referred as just the College...

well, personally I find all my classes that I take in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences (Physics, math, GEs, and writing) to be annoying. But it's mostly because those classes, except writing, are huge 75-200 people lectures and I don't blame the professors for all they have to do. The TAs, though, are pretty annoying, but it's the same thing at most colleges. And yes, the TAs do all the grading.

Pardon me for sounding grumpy, I have 2 midterms coming up :(...which is also why I haven't been around CC for awhile.

So how does the school take to the basketball team. I know that football is the big thing there. Does the b-ball team get any pub?

Yeah, the football team gets most of the publicity here. The b-ball team got better this year, but until they make a NCAA tourney I don't think many will bother to attend a game. I also don't think that the new arena will help much next year.

beammeup4 - just wondering, where did you find the list of complete rankings?

how is chemical eng at USC compared to other schools like UCB, UCLA and UCSD?

I really like USC, and hope that my son is able to attend USC.

thanks lovetocamp. Just wondering...where did you find this information? cuz I tried to find it but can't, unless you are subscribed to that Usnews website.

oh cool. thanks for the info! do you happen to have a list for bioengineering?
