Trojan Hall

As a recently admitted student, I have heard very mixed reviews about the honors dorms. I am very sociable and outgoing, and I also take my studies very very seriously. In that sense, I want to avoid North/New because in my view their party scene tips my perception of what balance is between studying/partying. So my real dilemma is trying to pick between Birnkrant and Trojan Hall. I've visited Birnkrant and liked how everything was spacious, new, comfortable, and I was told that it's great for studying and socializing.

However, Trojan Hall's Dean's Hall sounds like a great feature to me that makes Trojan Hall possibly be worth considering over Birnkrant.

I understand that Trojan Hall has rooms smaller and older than those of Birnkrant. Some have told me that the great people and great environment makes those things really irrelevant. Some say that they're not particularly small or old. And many have also said that Trojan Hall "sucks," that it's "too quiet." I also have the fear that too many people at Trojan Hall, as an "honors dorm," will be boring bookworms.

Has anyone visited Trojan Hall who can throw in their opinion here?

Any current residents who can also put in a word? What are some pros/cons of Trojan Hall?

And is the Dean's Hall that special of a program/interest group for a student who would try to seize every opportunity it grants?

Thanks for any input!

Choose Birnkrant. Trojan Hall is disgusting. There are ants crawling on the walls every time I take a shower, the ceilings leak, weird smells, the sound of the highway (literally 5 feet from my window) makes it noisy all the time, and I have somehow gotten sick 3 times in the past 2 months and I never got sick before I moved here. And the whole "deans hall" thing doesn't really make any sense, because the majority of people on my floor aren't special scholars or anything. They are just people who got stuck with Trojan Hall because they applied for housing late.

Oh, and the students are noisy here, too. That's just the way college dorms are. I would suggest New/North/Birnkrant because they are closer to the library, which is the only place I can study. Plus, I hear those dorms actually have study rooms, something Trojan Hall does not have (at least on my floor).

What are Triples in Birnkrant like? Do they end up being more fun with more people, or does it just get annoying and crowded?

From what I've seen, it's so NOT crowded since you have that extra common room. Probably even more comfortable than a double.

Hey, e.tube, if you live in Trojan hall, could I ask you a few questions about the RA's rooms? I'm going to be living there next year.

Triples in Birnkrant are reportedly awesome. Because you get 2 rooms for 3 people, which gives you a lot more space. You'll have a sleeping room and a studying room.

My friends live in Trojan, and they enjoy it. They're all friends and they met by walking through the halls.

Wait now. I lived in Trojan Hall and would highly recommend it, if it is still designated for Dean's Scholars.

They had a private library, gym, and sauna.

Perhaps it has gotten a bit run down, but, I wouldn't say that matters.

The very most important, huge, monumentally important part of college is the first part when you make your core friends. The friends you meet in your dorm will be at your weddings and hooking you up with your first killer job 15 years later.

Every dorm at USC is going to be a party. It is impossible to attend USC and not party; however, not all dorms will have really smart people. Especially USC, since it is a bit less selective than Harvard and Stanford, being a scholar and living at Trojan hall is a little bit special. Otherwise, every other hall is the same as the other.

But, if they no longer have the girls’ floor there, then, that might make me reconsider. .

Anyway, it's been a long time, but if there is anything I can answer for you, let me know.

By sauna, I assume that you mean the laundry room area, which has absolutely no ventilation? Obviously, there is still a girls floor in Trojan. All USC halls are co-ed. The gym/library are in Marks Hall. Still, Trojan Hall people can use them.

Trojan hall sucks a lot, take it from me, i live there. All honors kids playing WoW all day. Close to the freeway. The oldest dorms on campus. And worst worst worst, single sex floors.

Choose brinkrant. You'll be studying in Leavey most often anyways.

Oh, but the RA dorms here are nice. Spacious with nice couches and AC.

Birnkrant triples are really nice and have plenty of space. As psychik said, triples have 2 rooms for three people. Also, Brinkrant does have prime location. Great view of the quad and the reflecting pool. Also, TroGro is located in Birnkrant and Leavey library is very close. As far as Trojan, I would stay away from it if you like a social scene. Almost all the people I've talked to who live in the Dean's Halls don't like it. (I hear many people play Halo 3 and have Wii tournaments on Friday nights)

New/North is actually a really good mix between studying and partying. The students generally care about their grades. Also, since a very high percentage of the students in New/North go Greek, (50% of the guys in my wing and a much higher percentage of the girls across the hall. Compare this to the average USC Greek percentage, which is around 20% if I'm not mistaken). they often choose to party in the frats rather than in the dorm itself.

Anyway, That's my view on New/North. But I live here, so I'm biased.
