Trojan or Triton?

I'm stuck between USC and UCSD.

My reasoning: I'm from LA, so moving 2 hours away from home to UCSD would allow me to grow and everything.

I could always go to USC for medical school.

But I don't know! Should I stay close to home and go to USC? Will that be a smart move?

I've never moved away from home and I've been really looking forward to that...Will pre-med at USC open more doors for me than pre-med at UCSD?

Does anyone else have the same dilemma?

Any input would be nice guys =/ I’m really stuck here

USC is a far better and more recognizable name, if you can separate yourself from home, you will still grow.

I’d go to USC

but ucsd is so much more cheapter than usc, med school is gonna be freaking expensive… dont u think saving money at undergrad is a better idea?

also, bio & chem is reallly strong at ucsd. plus the weather is awesome.

i personally say ucsd  good luck!!

I would say USC. I know it’s tempting to move away from your family, but if you are premed, homesickness is just one of the things you can do without. I mean if you are really serious and are going to be hitting the books like crazy then what does it matter what the weather is like etc? As far as money goes if you are a good student you can probably get scholarships and financial aid if you really need it. I think the connections you make are USC will be valuable and so I would recommend attending that campus.

At the end of the day it should be where you are the most comfortable, but passing up USC for SD just for the “growing” experience is kind of well --dumb.

It would be a no-brainer for me. UCSD. USC is way too expensive and I really didn’t care for the campus or the overall vibe I got from the administration and students. However, this is an extremely personal choice and you should go where you will feel most comfortable. Don’t get caught up in rankings, there is much more to consider when choosing where you will spend the next two years of your life.

Consider the possibility of doing [Freshman Science Honors > USC College of Letters, Arts & Sciences](http://college.usc.edu/freshman-science-honors/) at USC.

if you live on campus at USC you’ll enjoy it. If you live off campus … lets just say the surrounding area sucks. Im assuming your under 21 so all of the fun stuff to do in LA wont be accessible to you. In SD you’ll feel safe, you’ll have plenty to do, you’ll still be getting a great education ( probably better… ). Oh and you wont be paying a ridiculous amount of money. Comes down to the name really… is being a trojan really that important to you? I think you should also be aware of statistics of people that start off premed and end up not going that route… so assuming that happens your not going to want just a BS biochem your going to want to go to grad school so you can do something other than work in a cooped up lab. If you go to grad school who cares if you went to UCSD or USC.

Hello,

I’d rather choose UCSD over USC. I go to USC and I regret making that decision. The area surrounding it on Figoura is always unsafe and like many of us, we get e-mails frequently about robberies and other crime related things. Plus, USC isn’t that beautiful. The name of USC made be reputable but the school doesn’t necessary matter as long as you are able to flourish in it.

UCSD is a great school. You are more likely to get into medical school from going to UCSD than USC, mainly because graduate schools cap enrollment from each school. Although USC has a name, it isn’t stellar for the safety of the people and the classes are made harder for the sake of its name. UCSD is still up there and people I asked right now that even goes to Berkeley as a senior are telling me that going to Berkeley was the most worse mistake… the people are just hella uptight. xP.

Do not attend a school merely for its prestige. I would suggest you do some research on the field you plan to work in, but I personally would recommend UCSD. I have friends from both schools, and usually the tritons tend to be satisfied with their overall experience. Not only will you grow at ucsd, but you’ll receive a quality education in one of the top schools in the nation although they are overlooked simply because they lack in athletics… Anyways, the cost is better. La Jolla over E. LA anytime. and its SD… one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S. plus if you never visited la jolla… you’re in for quite a treat :).

In the end… GO UCLA!

prestige for undergraduate is overrated…its more for bragging rights…if it was graduate school then it would be another case.

Given the dismal state of Calif’s economy, and the fact that funding cuts are coming to ALL state supported institutions, including education, I would choose USC if you or your parents can afford it.

choose Pre-Med USC

Thanks guys…and FYI I’m a transfer student and 21. It’s really tempting to move away from home due to personal reasons. I’ve also been at both campuses more than twice, and really loved both.

Sigh, this is tough. I’m not sure how much financial aid will cover for USC, but for SD they’ll cover for about 18,000 for the year.

neither. i say be a spartan at SJ State

If I had to do it over again, I’d go USC.

Without a doubt.

<— current UCSD student.

if you can afford it, i would choose USC, but UCSD is a great school as well!~
