Tropical Storm Isaac

Hi all you experienced Alabama parents. I’m wondering how the University fares if a tropical storm or hurricane hits the Alabama coast. I just dropped my baby off a few weeks ago and forced her to buy a raincoat and an umbrella. We are Californians use to earthquakes but that’s about it!

May get some rain if it moves inland – possibly some spin off storms - 5 hours inland, so normally no threat.

Tuscaloosa is too far inland to get any affect other than rain.

A raincoat and umbrella is a good idea anyway.

:)

Thanks, that’s good to hear. She’s already made good use of the raincoat!

The only effect of the tropical storm might be more use for her rain jacket and more puddles on the quad.

People as far north as Birmingham and Tuscaloosa did feel the effects of Katrina, though, so it is good to send your kids with “Hurricane Supplies”. There is a possibility of high wind and power outages, so it is a good idea that they have a flashlight and fresh batteries on hand.

Batteries, darn it. I knew there was something I was planning on adding to the next amazom order. I need to write a post it for that.

Sent from my DROID RAZR using CC

I left my D with a year’s supply of AA and AAA batteries, but I totally forgot about the D’s for her flashlights. Oh well, her weather radio has a crank battery and flashlight, so she might have to work for it, but she won’t be in the dark if the power goes off.

actually when Ivan and Katrina came thru there was alot of rain and wind with alot of power outages… Schools in Bham were even closed due to the post hurricane threat-I am sure UA has a weather plan and will enforce it…

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (but since I know there are a bunch of new parents following the thread) I have found following James Spann (a wonderful Birmingham meteorologist) to be a wonderful way to make sure that I know what is going on with AL weather. I made D follow him too.

On facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jamesspann</a>
On the web: [The Alabama Weather Blog](http://www.alabamawx.com/)

One of the “experienced” Moms suggested a solar battery charger. Small solar chargers can be purchased at outdoor equipment places like REI.

James is THE MAN! He knows everything and I am amazed how great he(and all his coworkers) are during tornadoes, hurricanes and snow/ice storms- he is dedicated to his job and will keep you VERY informed! He stays up for days at a time if there are any weather issues! he is on twitter and facebook!

Except the nearest REI store is in Atlanta or Nashville. Try Academy Sports on Skyland Blvd.

Actually if the hurricane is strong enough when it makes landfall, as was the case with Katrina and Ivan, the it can be still be a tropical storm as it moves through central Alabama. Threats include heavy wind, and rain. In other cases, the remnants of a weaker hurricane can spin off weak (emphasis WEAK tornados.

Hmmm…When will UA begin to feel Isaac? I sure hope it won’t be Thursday. That’s Get on Board Day! YIKES!

^^unfortunately, James Spann is predicting Thursday.

I heard James say last night that if Alabama ends up on the east side of this hurricane, then we can expect anywhere from 5-10 inches of rain.
James can also be followed at alabamawx.com or you may subscribe to follow his Facebook page.

Looks like James is saying Wednesday now; in response to a question about flights to Dallas from Birmingham for the game.

Tuscaloosa falls between yellow and orange.
