For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to become a doctor. My dad was an orthopedic surgeon and his dad was an orthopedic surgeon, and as the saying goes, “families of doctors breed doctors.”
But it turns out, the everyone and their mothers now is interested in medicine, not because of the actual medicine, but because of the money it brings. I’ve never really thought of doing anything else but medicine, and I intended on majoring in biology but literally everyone who applies to med-school majors in biology and i don’t know what other major i could possibly major in.
I don’t have a strong math base, but I understand Calculus really well (Taking AP Calculus). My science base pretty decent, I’m currently taking AP Biology as a senior.
I hate any type of history and i literally don’t know what the hell to major if it’s not biology, but I’ve heard that it’s really competitive to get accepted into med-school if you’re applying with the same exact major as the other hundreds of applicants.
So basically, what can i put as my major on college applications that will help me later in the future when I’m applying to med-school?
It doesn’t matter what major you apply with. Unless you are applying to a specific school/program that has distinct admission criteria (ex. engineering, business etc.) then admissions fully understands that you will be free to change your major once you are in college. As one admission officer told me – half of the applicants apply undecided, and of those who apply with an intended major, half end up switching once they are in college. You can put math, biology, undecided etc. and it won’t make a real difference in how your application is viewed.
Typically college students formally declare a major in the second semester of the sophomore year. This way students have the opportunity to take college classes and get a better sense of where their interests and aptitudes lie.
