Hey all, this is kinda off-topic but urgent also in a way and I'm totally freaking out...

I was driving back home today on I-57 and was kind of rushed since I was already running an hour late to catch a flight with my family at O'Hare. I was following the flow of traffic and stupid me didn't realize that I was speeding (93 on 65), a cop flagged me down for going 96 (would put me at 31 over) and took me Drivers License without telling me about my bond options. I'm not as much worried about my Licence as my court appearance. It's going to be in some courthouse between Chicago and Champaign, I have a clean record. Is it possible to get off with court supervision or traffic school? I don't have the money on me to hire a lawyer without my parents finding out (broke 19 y/o college kid).

You need to tell your parents now. Do you want them to learn of this so they can consider what to do and possibly help or do you want them to learn of it when their insurance comes up for renewal and the insurance company notes the ticket and increases their insurance rates as a result? In other words you are wrong to think your parents will not learn of the ticket?

Moreover, you have a very serious issue. That being ticketed for 31 mph over the limit puts you into a fairly recent Illinois law that says anyone speeding at 31 mph or above the limit can now be found guilty of a misdemeanor and fined up to $1500 and imprisoned for up to six months. It is possible you could go and get supervision and traffic court but don’t assume that will necesarily be the result particularly since that law was passed because of pressure from public interest groups that heavily criticize judges for being too easy on high speed violators. Talk to your parents now!

I tend to agree with drusba – best bet with parents and the legal system is generally to just fess up and accept responsibility.

As a caution to others, when I was a UIUC undergrad back in the 80s, I think I earned three speeding tickets speeding on I-57 in Kankakee County mid way between Chicago and UIUC (half the speeding tickets in my life). Major speed trap!!!
