Trouble deciding

I finally finished visiting all of the schools I'm considering and it has made my decision even harder! I'm trying to decide between UMiami (florida), Tulane, UNC CH and UGA. I'm in the honors program at every school, and I got the DHA from Tulane, a 3/4 scholarship from UM, full ride to UGA (in state), and no word yet from UNC. At this point, if I get no $$ from UNC it will be between UM and Tulane.

I visited Tulane for Honors Weekend and loved it. The people are friendly and the school is very pretty. My two main concerns are that it is not very diverse and that there aren't as many opportunities as at UM. I am Jewish (I should fit in well...) but I've grown up in an extremely diverse area, and I love different cultures, types of people, etc. So Miami definitely has that going for it, whereas Tulane doesn't. I'm also interested in doing work in Latin America, so I would think that Miami has much more to offer in terms of jobs, internships, etc. My only problem is that I can go to Tulane for 'free' and that I really love it there.

Also, is the poli. sci. department at Tulane any good? I've heard negative reviews and would like another opinion.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Tulane's Center for Latin American Studies should be your cup of tea then.

Im also deciding whether to go to Miami or TUlane for Poli. Sci but im not in the honors program for either. Im visiting both in 2 weeks.

I would choose tulane

sivan:
D visited Tulane for Honors weekend and absolutely loved it. If I had to bet I think it is going to be her choice. She is Asian and felt very comfortable and at home there. I think it is a very welcoming and accepting environment for minorities and has so much to offer.

Wow! You and I are in the same boat. Except, without the scholarships haha. I am deciding between Tulane and UM too. Goodluck

If it makes a difference, I have never before been to a college campus whre I met NO ONE who was not friendly and happy to stop what they were doing and share their experiences, students and staff alike. Honors weekend at Tulane decided my son, and the decision made us happy partly because of the warm welcome we all received everywhere. It even beat UNC-CH, where we're in state and have visited for several programs that sought to draw our son in as a good math/science student.

CT---did your son decide to attend? I'm still trying to decide. I love the school but I haven't visited Chapel Hill and I'm worried that I'm overlooking it. I honestly haven't had the time to get over there. One thing leaning me towards Tulane is that if I go there and change my mind I can transfer, but if I go to Chapel Hill and change my mind I won't have my nice little DSA if I want to go to Tulane again. I love the culture and the school and they have a dance program, which Chapel Hill doesn't. I'm just waiting for something to click. It's a mixture of being far away from home (I live right down the road from you in Candler, so you know how that is) and the "party school" thing. Coming from someone who had to have Tulane beat over Chapel Hill and is from North Carolina, what finally pushed your son into it?

Hi Ballerina.

The main thing that made my son decide in favor of Tulane was the fact that they offer Cognitive Science, and Chapel Hill does not. In that way, you are in the same boat. You also share his position with regard to the DSA. We haven't yet heard from Chapel Hill about finaid, but it isn't likely that they'll match the DSA since they don't offer that many big scholarships besides the Morehead.

That said, since he's in state, Chapel Hill, without any aid whatsoever, would cost about what Tulane will cost with the package he's been offered if he doesn't use any loans, and that's the real equivalency.

Yes, it's far away, but I just don't see the down side unless you hate hot weather. I wouldn't like it there, myself, but I'm not him (Yes, I know it should be "he"--I'm a writing teacher!). I went to a giant state university. I saw an advisor for ten minutes one time when I first arrived. Tulane's Honors Program sounds VERY supportive in terms of advisement and other similar features.

I would never try to convince anyone to choose one school over another. All I'm doing is answering for my son as best I can since he's off doing Calculus at the WCU math contest, toward your neck of the mountains. I hope something I've said helps you. I wish you the best, and I hope we meet someday if you choose Tulane. (We could discuss carpooling if it gets that far!)

Yeah, if I decide to go I think carpooling would be a great idea!
