Trouble figuring out if a BFA program is worth the money

Is college really worth it? Like I’ve heard of a handful that have made it without it. Should I just goto a BFA program or goto a BA program like Kennesaw State University

There are many variables there to consider. And this has been discussed on the MT forum in the past. As I see it there are 2 questions here: 1. go to college or not, and 2. BFA or BA.

For 1, it is often a question of whether you want a college degree, which can be beneficial in a number of ways even if you don’t go into theatre (or if you chage out of theater as a profession). Also, are you good enough to be cast professionally without the additional training you would get in school. Some are, but many aren’t.

For 2, do you want the extra rigueur from a BFA degree and can you get accepted into one. Or do you prefer the academic flexibility that comes with a BA. Either is a good path. You must determine what is right for you.

I think the best anyone on this forum can do is help you understand the questions. The right path for you is a decision only you can make.

There are several questions you are asking:

  1. Is college worth it. Hey, Anna Kendrick made it without college, right? If you are Anna Kendrick then you don't need college. If not...
  2. BFA vs BA: in some ways this is semantics. What you are probably REALLY asking is Conservatory vs Liberal Arts. Not all BFAs are conservatory programs -- they vary along a very wide spectrum. And some BA performance concentrations are more intense in terms of theatre training and have less liberal arts.

My personal opinion is that college is worth it because being an actor involves having a body of knowledge to drawn on in addition to acting techniques and pure talent.

My further personal opinion is that a liberal arts basis is a great way to approach the business and craft.

That said, conservatory programs are great for many people. I think the best approach is to visit and learn as much about the various program types. Getting the right fit is a VERY personal decision.

You’re amazing thank you so much! I think I’ve narrowed down my decision.
