Trouble filling out FAFSA for parent's info

I'm in sort of an odd situation, my mother is married to my stepfather however, my father use to claim me on his taxes according to my mom despite the fact that I never lived with him.

Anyway, my stepfather is "locked away" and his situation is making it difficult for me to continue the fafsa because he is not part of the current "household size"(he has been away for quite awhile). Only my mom, siblings, and I are part of the lease and live in our home.

I am really confused on what I should do because my mom doesn't want to input his data since she's missing certain things.

Your mom would file the FAFSA as separated and will only include her income/assets (she is currently not living with your step-dad).

For schools that give institutional aid they may still ask for your dad’s income/assets.

It’s okay to list as separated even though they’re still married? Is there any chance I’ll give disqualified for fafsa if I do that?

Yes, it is ok to list them as separated (they do not have to be legally separated). They are not living together in the same home. No, you will not be disqualified for federal aid. He would not be counted in your household because he is not be supported by your mom

Thanks again, I will change the status to what you suggested.

What should I put for “When did your parent become divorced or separated? Enter the month and year” ?

the month and year would be when your stepdad left to “go away.”

Makes sense, I’ll ask my mother about that.

You should complete the fafsa with your mom. This will determine financial aid status and your mother should help you answer the questions and verify everything.
