This quarter I've been having a lot of trouble finding a good place to study. I really love the library and go there a lot. However, last quarter I had more free time in my afternoons which is the time I prefer to study. Our library is really big and has pretty quite areas, but at night I never want to go. It's so cold and such a hassle to go all the way to the library especially when it's icey. My dorm has a study room with one table which is always taken, a lobby which is always loud and a TV lounge but people are always there too. My roommate didn't come back so I have the room to myself, however, my dorm is very loud and are walls are paper thin. I also get VERY distracted in my room and end up never doing anything. The main problem is that I like complete silence otherwise I can't focus on my work. Even in the library on the floor that says, no talking, no phone conversations and no crunchy food, people will sit together right near you and whisper the whole time. I know I need to do more work in the evenings and always feel guilty if I don't do much, but I can never find a place to study in my dorm and can never motivate myself to walk all the way to the library when it is late.

Maybe find some places that are off campus like in a local coffee shop where it is quiet or something. =)

Use ear plugs and become really focused. If you really want to study, you'll find a way to regardless of the distractions, as they will always be there no matter where you go.

I have ADHD, so I tend to get distracted a lot. I try to spend at least 5 or so hours in the library a day. I don't mind if it is really loud, it's just if the whole room is quite except for one person whispering. That's what really bugs me. My mom is sending me some ear plugs, so hopefully that'll work. There's this one floor in the library I like that says specifically no group studying and no talking what so ever, so it really bothers me when people choose to go there and talk the whole time even the the sign right on there table says not to. I mean there are 6 other floors that you can talk on, why choose the one floor that you're not supposed to talk on?

so wake up super early every day and study in the morning

Well it doesn't open until 8 and I have class at 9. Some nights I can make it there, but on nights when I have club meetings and such, I don't have the time. I do go in between classes which helps, but I still need to do more work and at night it is busiest and therefore loudest.

There are several solutions,

Suck it up and go to the library really late or really early

Buy some nice Bose noise canceling headphones

Maybe go to another library nearby, there is a public library near my campus that is extremely deserted and no one ever goes there

At my school, there are some classrooms that are open 24/7, you might want to check that out.

^ yeah, empty classrooms ftw

there's always some random old ppl/profs/nerds who try to get in there after you though, so make sure to close the doors

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to check and see if there are any classrooms open, that could be helpful. There is a pubic library, but it is a few miles away and freshman aren't allowed to have cars on campus. Hopefully the ear plugs will help. I'll try an go straight to the library after dinner next week too. That way I can't get distracted in my dorm.

Isn't there separate room in the library where you can study? In my library there is a big area with books but they provide small rooms for study groups or something. Try to get in there. Otherwise go to sleep early and wake up at 4 or 5 to study. All the noise and party should die down a little bit by then.

Hurrr, pubic library. /twelve-year-old mind

If you can't get one of the study rooms, I second the idea to check out classrooms that no one is using. I've used classrooms that aren't being used for class as study rooms on occasion, and they tend to be really quiet and really conducive to studying. At my school, they usually aren't marked--most people don't bother, since we have a library with a lot of study rooms as well as a "student learning center" with a similarly large number of study rooms--but if you just wander quietly through a building which is open about fifteen minutes after classes would start, you can usually find a good room.

Also, if your public library is too far away to walk and you don't have a car, there's always the buses. Assuming your campus bus doesn't go by there (mine doesn't), and you don't want to walk it, check out your city bus system. At my university, students get to use the city buses free if we have our student IDs on us, and I know that there's a city route that goes from a common stop near me straight to the nearest public library, which is HUGE and very quiet.

Study in the laundry room.

The most talking in the library is probably going to happen in the evenings. That's when the majority of students are going to study, so plan around that. Or try the classroom idea. Aren't there any spooky, desolate stacks in the library where you can study? In my experience, nobody goes to those, so they tend to be very quiet.

If you're in college, why don't you study in the lounges in the different campus buildings? I remembered a long time ago I would actually trek to my undergraduate school's hall and study in the lounges. They had really nice sofas and coffee tables. You need to learn how to study at night (or morning) at the library whether the weather is bad or nice.

The only buildings on campus with study lounges are the dorms, however, you have to have a key to get into them. I guess the problem isn't really going to the library(i'm there right now) it's just that it is still noisey. Although there is a quite policy, they only inforce it on one of the floors, meaning they only will inforce it if you go up to the librarian and complain. On the other floors, even if you go and complain that someone is talking loudly in a designated quite area, they can't do anything about it. Even the quietist floor has people talking. I prefer to study during the afternoon and morning when it is not so loud, but I have class and therefore don't have the time to go. Next quarter I may schedule my classes with more free time during the day to go to the library.

Then get a key to gain access to the study lounges in your dorm. I don't see what is the big deal here.

tenisghs- as I mentioned earlier my dorm does not have a study lounge. It has a piano room with one table which is almost always occupied. It does have a TV lounge but people are always watching TV there. What I meant was other dorms have lounges in there buildings but you must live there to use them. The big deal is that I am busy during the day and in the evening the library is very loud. We have one floor with a quite policy that is inforced but when I was there last night there were three groups of people around me studying together and talking no-stop for several hours, when I was trying to study for a very important midterm.
