I'm taking 15 (14 academic ones) credits this term:

FWS
Chem 207
Evolutionary Bio
Mandarin 109

to put things into perspective: my fws trails by only a few hours than Chem 207 per week in terms of workload (it's that intense). i'll probably end up with a 3.9 or 4.0, but the workload, especially at prelim time, still takes up all of my time.

with that being said, i want a more challenging semester, but i don't want the work to bog me down so much that i can't play in the tennis club/gym/go out/etc. so i want your opinion on how the second semester's workload is going to be when compared to my first semester

I never took stats before but I'm good with math. creative writing's workload also shouldn't be too bad. genetics might be a bit of work, and i know mandarin 110 is going to be a ****load. does this schedule seem managable to you if i can, with relative ease, handle my first semester's workload?

Chinese 109 is normally pretty tough. I'm assuming you are a native speaker and can breeze right through it. In that case, I would say that your first semester schedule is only about average in terms of difficulty.

Stats 171 is a cakewalk. I'd advise against taking genetics as a freshman. It was the toughest course I took as a bio major (I'm sure you've heard some rumors about it). Replace it with an easier bio course and you'd have a very mangeable schedule.

You're not going to get into Creative Writing. ALL the sections- even the night ones- almost immediately fills up with seniors and, if they're lucky, juniors. So throw that one out immediately and pick another.

im good at solving puzzles and problem-solving; my advisor said i can handle genetics. if i did not take genetics, what other bio courses can i take?

biochem? orgo? of course not.

im more interested in genetics than microbio (291, which i think is my only other alternative), and besides, i don't like rote memorization much.

what other english courses are there other than FWS? I'm interested in fiction (preferably modern ie hemingway, steinbeck), poetry, expository/creative writing, and critical analysis

thanks again

and mandarin 109 is not a tough course to get an A (or even an A+) in if you really try, and by really trying, the workload is atrocious. For me, it's fine because I attended first and second grade elementary school in China before, so at least I can retain a moderate amount of vocab. There's a humongous emphasis of vocabulary memorization and usage. You learn about ~50 - 60 new ones every week when you're into the course.

I took Engl 204 and Engl 364, both of which were good classes that focused on contemporary American Lit (stuff written after 1900). Some good authors were included: Hemingway, Faulkner, Doctorow, Pynchon, Morrison, etc. No steinbeck in either class though, sadly.

Engl 204 is a literature class. You read lit. You analyze lit. It's a fun and easy course and the professor is great and down to earth. The prof for Engl 364 is more eccentric and seems to expect higher level of analysis.

Didn't take any expository writing courses.

thanks. just a couple more questions norcal,

On schedulizer, only the two lectures show up for genetics; the lab does not. When do you guys have your genetics labs? Also, how hard is it to get into the time slot that you want for stats/genetics if you're on the waiting list?
