Ok, here's the deal. My freshman homie at CMC, who is also premed, decided to spend all nite studying for a bio and a chem midterm both on the same day. Given his grogginess the next morning and some bad studying habits, he got a 50% on the first chem midterm. So right now, he's considering two options: drop, or continue and study hard and get a B+/B, worst case scenario B-. He has until Oct. 20 to drop, and if he does then he will have only 3 courses this semester, overload w/ 5 next semester, and take chem over the summer at a local state college. Will this look very bad to med schools (the drop will not show on his transcript)? He is freaking out right now, and my personal opinion is to go all out and get the B or B+, because it IS only first semester freshman year, but he really wants an A. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Hahaha

Your friend ought to talk to the prof. Worst case, your friend keeps his 50 and is faced with the same dilemma. Best case, he gets cut a break (other exams count more so he can redeem himself, drop an exam, extra credit project, etc.) You never know.

unfortunately, he DID talk to the professor, who's a nice guy, but i guess straight by the book. The guy said "if you go all out, you can still pull off a B or even B+, but one more exam looking anything like this will sink you."

Honestly, I would drop. Med-school admissions is, sadly, a game of getting the best grades you can.

Yeah, that's what he's been saying, and looking at various sites I have to agree. So he's pretty sure he's gonna drop, but I convinced him to still attend the lectures (with the professor's permission) and do the hw for the class, meaning he just won't do tests or labs. That way, his chemistry foundation won't be super weak for OChem. He agrees to that.
Thanks guys,
