I'm trying to find a science internship, but from what I've heard around the school, especially from the smartest kids with good relationships with the teachers, our entire science department is pretty generic in (and perhaps just generally not good at writing) their letters of rec. Is there any way I can get around this? Thanks.

Well, you can’t really “get around” it. Does the science internship require a letter from specifically a science teacher?

If anything, get the letter from a science teacher you know best.

Yup, the science teacher is required. The science teacher who loves me, though, is notorious for writing bad recs like “This student is pretty smart,” even for his favorites.

Do you have any connections with STEM enterprises? If so, a relevant internship might be developed in the public or private sectors, without school/teacher involvement. Admittedly, this likely a long-shot, but it isn’t an impossibility.
