I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet: Suit Filed Against Gunnery In Sex Abuse Case -- Courant.com
Maybe someone else can make the link work. This is every school's nightmare, and worse because the person charged is the Dean of Students.

Wow! I’m surprised I’ve never heard of that…

Not that I’m saying it’s true, but the The Gunnery also has a reputation for hazing…

It was just in the paper yesterday. This is not your usual teacher-student case as it involves at least four students and an administrator.

Sigh, fif learned of this over a week ago – and decided against posting it, primarily for personal reasons we have friends there and like the school. Sadly, it probably should be out there, but fif would hope that people not base their opinion of the school on a so far unproven allegation. Bio is right, however, this is every school’s really bad dream.

bs_hopeful – your comment has no basis in fact, and this matter does not involve hazing…

FIF- me too, but I think this should be out there. It isn’t the usual “one teacher/one student” allegation. I have a question for you though- do you think that the Courant reporters hang out at the courthouses (look how fast they were all over the Miss Porter’s thing), or does someone at the court tip them off when an interesting lawsuit is filed?

Check the phone records for the plaintiff’s attorney…

Well, I was kind of wondering about that. But, in the case of the Miss Porter’s girl, it ended up being picked up by the national wires and must have been mortifying for the girl. Why would they do that?

Miss Porter’s is a nationally known school, with famous alumnae including Jackie O. Also, the whole secret society thing resonated. The Gunnery is less well known, and after all this is just another run of the mill sexual abuse case. :0(

I know, but why would the plaintiff’s attorney want it even in the local newspapers? To force a settlement?

That is really sad. I think Gunnery is such a wonderful school. These things happen—sometimes they are reported, sometimes they aren’t, but I hope Gunnery can move forward.

bs_hopeful, from where do you accumulate your extensive knowledge of The Gunnery? I would be very interested to know…

no problem :)

my parents grew up in the area and have a lot of friends that went to prep schools in NW connecticut, as well as a friend who is a lawyer in one of the bordering towns of the gunnery, who said that there have been some issues there in the past. I’ve even heard such things from students when I was there.

i’m not saying it’s a bad school or anything. if you love it, then go for it!

keep in mind that i’m not saying it’s necessarily true.
