I agree with the sentiment that we are NOT the admissions committee so we don't know what was going on with his application. I think it is better not to speculate.Just be happy for the guy. If you think about it we have a bunch of high school students w/o a college education trying to explain who is college material...sounds a little strange...

I don't think AA could have done THAT much. I know it helps and all, but I started this thread not to bash, but to really ask if there was ANYTHING I WAS MISSING. In my opinion, there are plenty of minority applicants that beat 1170.

This is so ignorant.
Bottom line is that you don't know why this kid got in, you don't know his situation or essay fully, and you don't know the steps he took to get into Yale. There could be a multitude of reasons this individual was accepted into Yale..

Well, in my opinion (no pun intended) qwerty693, if you wanted to know what YOU WERE MISSING, why didn't you just post your stats and asked for chances? Why do you have to ride on the coattails of someone who was admitted. How do you suppose we tell you what you're missing when you don't give us anything about yourself to begin with?

The only way he should get in is if he has 14 other brother and sisters with no knowledge of his father, a quadriplegic mother, and works every hour he is not in school. Which he didn't, because he did track and apparently poorly.

I still have doubts that would justify his acceptance.
Maybe if he wrote poetry during his work break that surpassed Frost, Keats, and Emerson combined.

You can all say good job, but it still devalues the endless work that others put in.

Lucky, you don't know too much - I DID post my stats. I'm not looking for an arguement. Search through my old posts and you'll find plenty on me...

um....i dont think this student is lying. A girl from my school, an African American female in a VERY afluent town, got into Duke and Upenn with an 88 average w. no honors or aps and a 1210 SAT score

Hey qwerty693, I'm not going out of my way to look for your stats. If you want us to tell you what your missing, stop being lazy and put your stats in this thread.

This thread displays so much ignorance.
1) You're obviously underestimating this kid. If he had a mediocre gpa, only did track, and can barely talk to people, why would he even be in the running for class president? He must have had some redeeming characteristics that made him more attractive than all the other boys with 2300s.
2) You never saw his application. Maybe he had extenuating circumstances, great out-of-schools ECs, or an amazing essay.
3) AA doesn't guarantee anybody an Ivy league acceptance. This African-American in my class with a legacy dad and granddad, better SATs than the example given, and major out-of-school ECs got deferred from Yale EA.
4) You people act like every African-American thats gets into Yale only gets in because of their skin color. I had a 2370 and great ECs and have already met others with incredible achivements.

You guys are ridiculous. Read some of the HYP early admit threads. When a white or asian gets in with low scores, everyone cheers and says, "thats a great example of scores not being everything!" When a URM gets in with low scores, it's Affirmative Action. Give me a break.

P.S. I just checked the admits.yale.edu website. Only three people from the Bronx got in early. I'm sure a decent amount of blacks from the Bronx applied EA, and many probably had better stats. Obviously this kid had something that Yale thought was very impressive.
