i received $8,700 from upenn’s trustee scholarship, but what is it???

Penn has a lot of random scholarships I think. I recieved a few thousand in the scholarship from a family that donates, I guess.

Yeah, I got that too, except the amount is different. I think it's both merit and need based, not sure...
But it's a lot of money and I need it!

damn....i wished i had recieved some scholarship. all i got was a measley penn grant.

Yes...i also had scholarship that came from a specific person that had "other criteria" other than financial need.

I thought ivies didnt give merit based aid?

yea i dunno, i read the letter more carefully and this is what i think it meant: trustee scholarships give u money/ a financial aid package that that doesn't include loans so u won't have debt...

yes? no?

kangxi: well trustee scholarships are based on need too, i guess it's not like really merit based lol...i dunno these ppl are tricky...

Here's what it says...

"The scholarship has been awarded to you because of your excellent history of personal accomplishment and academic achievement, and your promise of continued intellectual growth."

and...

"Like all of Penn's undergraduate grants and scholarships, the amount of the Trustee Scholarship is related to financial need. However, the awards to Trustee Scholars are increased to ensure that you will not need a student loan to meet your financial need."

So it's both merit and need based. I think it's a separate part of your financial aid package, but I am still unsure.

And the thing I am confused over is that I got $22,000... Our family is definitely not poor, so what's the deal? Not that I wouldn't want the money or anything...

It also says that "you should be eligible," does that mean the money is not guaranteed yet?

Maybe as long as you keep up your grades in high school and even at penn? thats what i was thinking...

So i guess they first look at your financial situation before looking at other criteria for these scholarships so they can say its "need-based"

Trustee scholarship is technially need based - since Ivy leagues do not have true merit scholarships. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they underestimate your family contirbution in order to raise amount of need.

hmm my family is not poor but its def not rich...so...wheres my money?! lol...ohhh welllllllll....

It's all need based. The provided quotations don't prove otherwise.

This is extremely unusual, especially for an ED applicant. I don't know, but I suspect that if you don't need the money, the award will be reduced when they look over financial aid in April.
