So how exactly does the Trustee Scholarship work? Supposedly, 1-2%, or 100 people, get this full scholarship.

The honors program is for the top 10%, and the Dean's scholarship is for the top 25% (as far as I'm aware). I was admitted early, with a $17,000 per year Dean's scholarship (I only saw one other person in this forum get that amount, and none higher.... most were $10k-$15k), and I was admitted to the honors program.

Do I have a good shot at getting the full Trustee scholarship? My stats are pretty good, except for my GPA, but with NU's automatic weighting (0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP), my overall (grade 9-11) GPA is about 3.6, but with an upward trend (grade 11 is 3.8-3.85). I got a 35 on the ACT's, 800 on Math I and Math II, 750 Physics B, 700 Chem. My extra's are pretty good, some very unique stuff.

Not trying to make this into a "chance me" thread, I'm really just looking for information about it, and just in a general sense, how difficult it is to get. I figured since I was on the higher end (possible max) of the Dean's scholarship, that I may very well be in the top 5% if not higher.

I was wondering the same thing. I also got into honors with the $17,000 Dean’s scholarship, and I have the high test score (33 on ACT) with semi-low GPA (3.7).

So, yeah, any information on the Trustee scholarship would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you go to the NEU website it will give you some basics. For the full rides you are looking at being in the top 1 percent of the applicant pool. The profile of admitted students will give you an idea of what those stats would look like. I’m sorry but a 3.6 or 3.7 gpa is not going to be in that top 1 percent.

Let’s all keep in mind that there is no way of knowing until April 1st who is selected as a Trustee’s scholar. I don’t think anyone can really “chance” someone for receiving this scholarship as we don’t really know what the top 1-2% of Northeastern’s pool looks like.

Also, it’s not 100 people who receive this scholarship. Rather, Northeastern gives out 100 total national merit and trustees scholarships, which could mean 50 NM, 50 trustees, 75 NM, 25 trustees, etc.

smart.cookie I disagree. Yes you can’t know what the top 1-2 percent looks like exactly as each year is different but if you look at last year’s freshmen profile you can get a pretty good idea that a 3.7 gpa isn’t going to be in that top percentage.

Just a sidenote, I think I saw about 4 people who also had the same amount you received, but of course there still are the RD applicants to account for.

" Just a sidenote, I think I saw about 4 people who also had the same amount you received, but of course there still are the RD applicants to account for. "

Right, but none got higher, which probably means that I received the highest Dean’s scholarship, which probably means that I’m in the top 5% (as the top 10% receive honors, and many people got honors with a lower scholarship)

@marcus111: when schools give out merit money, they definitely don’t expect everyone to attend the school. I think NU sends more money in merit aid packages than they actually have, if that makes sense. Unfortunately, it is not divied up after RD.

Does anyone know if that same explanation applies for the Trustee Scholarship as well? If the applicants who receive the Trustee Scholarship choose not to attend NU and turn down their scholarship, what then happens to their scholarship?

If these are given out in March/April, do they require EA acceptees to send in their first semester grades? I’m not expecting to get such great grades this semester, since I’m taking a step back now that I’m accepted. But if they’re going to base it off the new grades as well, then I could be at a disadvantage. I know that they require you to send your final year grades, but I have no idea about semester grades.

@DonnaMom: I’m currently a freshman in the honors program and had very similar stats (4.0 unweighted, 2230 SAT, 790 US History and 750 Math 2 SAT IIs, and 2 AP scores of 5 and taking 4 APs when I was applying). And I only got $14,000 Dean’s Scholarship. But good luck!

I’m a little bit confused. I’m a NMSF waiting to hear about being a Finalist and was just accepted EA. Does Northeastern guarantee full tuition to all Finalists who name the school as their first choice or does it only help our chances for getting a Trustee Scholarship?

This is from the admissions rep in our area… my daughter is a National merit semi and the rep said the full tuition is guaranteed and the student will also compete for Trustee which means full-ride.

For other wondering who else got the Dean’s scholarship…
got into Pharm, 17K, honors,
2260 SAT
4.47 weighted
very good EC
9 AP classes
Naitonal merit semifinalist

I’m also a NMS Semi right now, awaiting finalist notification. Did the admissions rep recommend doing anything besides faxing the certificate for finalist when available?

By the way, I was accepted into ChemE, honors, with 17k Dean’s as well

I would love to know the stats of past Trustee scholars is any of them are reading this. For those of you that think it will help as a comparison, here are my stats:
17k/ year
2380 SAT (800 CR, 800 W, 780 M)
91.4/ 100 QPA (unweighted)
800 Math II, 720 Lit, 710 Chem
I am taking 6 AP tests this year, 3 are self- study
