Trustees

sfgiants, are you sure? I know on the website it says that you cannot defer, and instead it mentions some other odd term. I called the admissions office to find out and they said that you can defer, they just call it by a different name. Or were you just talking about the scholarship not carrying over? Oh my goodness, I hope you can, otherwise I am screwwwwwwwed.

oh ok then, you made it sound like you were competing with us. or maybe i'm just being a blonde.

i really doubt a scholarship offer would carry over if you skip a year

I'd trust the admissions office over me. If they said you can take a gap-year, then they are probably right.

sfgiants is correct. You have to matriculate at USC for at least 1 semester, then get prior approval for a leave of absence in order to protect your scholarship. Approx 200 are invited to interview for Trustees, and 100 receive them.

what about the presidential...what percent gets that one???

i am a trustee scholar class of 08 and ive been an interviewer the past 2 years ... if any of you have any questions i would be happy to answer them

hey usctrojan08! here's a question to start off with:

so I was looking at past threads and people were advising to emphasize your well roundedness. I was wondering, in the interviews etc, for the people who are awarded trustee scholarships (I'm already invited) do the interviewers/people deciding like to see "passion" more or well-roundedness more? I mean I have both sides but it's just a matter of what I should emphasize more I guess..

hey!
do you know for sure how many people get chosen to interview for a trustee?

I've heard, 200 people get interviewed for trustee and 100 are chosen.

usctrojan -- the info on the website about Explore USC says to wear "business attire" for the interview. So does this mean that guys should wear a sports coat and tie?

usctrojan08,
Do you guys (the interviewers) have a print out of our app at the interview? Will you bring up aspects of the app like quick takes, essys, etc.?

thanks

wow thats a lot of questions ..

the interviewers will ask the questions, so basically just answer the questions as honestly as you can ... as far as differentiating between well roundedness and passion, i would personally say to emphasize self-motivated passion ... as in things that you feel passionately about, be positive all the time

its actually closer to around 300 people who are interviewed ... then there are around 100-120 people who actually accept the scholarship, and since there are some people who are offered it but do not take it, there are some number more who are offered it

By business attire, they mean as formal as you possibly can ... if you wore a dark suit you would not be out of place at all ... a blue coat and tie would the more informal than i would personally wear

They do have a copy of your application and anything on it is obviously fair game ... for the most part, they arent looking to "catch" you at all, its more like "i see you have done ____ in high school, why dont you tell me a little about that" ... some professors who do the the interviews ask for opinions on current events and things like that, keep in mind that there is only 1 interview of about 20-30 minutes (since they are on a strict schedule)

if i didnt sufficiently answer any of these questions just let me know or message me again

usctrojan08
What do girls have to wear to the interviews?
Also, do you know how many people are usually chosen
for the interview for the presidential and how many
are actually offered the scholarship?
:-)

Ohh! I've got a question, too. If you don't get the Trustee scholarship, are you eligible for the Presidential?

And also, is it possible to get both the Presidential scholarship and the National Merit Finalist at the same time?

If you don't get trustees, you could either get presidential, deans, or nothing at all. The second two options are not very frequent.

NMF scholarships and trustee/presidential are mutually exclusive- you can only get one.

^ I can answer those. :)

Yes, you can get the presidential if you don't get the trustee.

The national merit finalist is essentially a presidential scholarship... I think you're asking if you get both and thus get a full scholarship, but no, you only get 1/2 tuition if you are a NMF and do not get the trustee.

hey usctrojan08,
do the interviewers typically ask questions about current events, and do they get really specific with them?
or if you are interested in something will they ask you for a real world situation dealing with it? <--i dont no if that made sense but I jsut mean like a current event dealing with ur interest i guess

usctrojan08,

do we have to dress formal the first day?

will we be given an opportunity at the end where the interviewers ask something like " is there anything you would like to add/say."

the questions that they ask all depend on how they are feeling ... they can get very specific about them and they wont shy away from politically charged questions (especially the professors who are on the interview panel) such as "what is your position on the war in iraq .... why?" ... there is no script that they have to stick to and there is no real pattern for what they do ... i dont think they would ask your opinion on modern music if you were a chem major, but anything that a reasonable person would expect you to have an opinion on would be fair game ... from their point of view, the key would be to see how you react or how you defend your opinion, not the actual opinion ... honestly, the things that all interviewers that i know value the most are confidence and an upbeat attitude, they are looking for people who will be the leaders of the Class of 2011, so try not to stress out too much about the interview ... PRETEND that there isnt 150K riding on your 20 minute conversation

The first day is a bunch of tours so wear whatever you want ... however keep in mind that some of the interviewers are admissions officers who you may meet the first day, as a guy i wore a nice polo and some dockers ... you might be given that opportunity although not for sure ... they will definitely ask you if you have any questions for them

if you are NMF and you get presidential, they throw in an extra $1000 scholarship for good measure, don't know if it's renewable or what yet, it's just on my finaid summary.
