truth behind "need blind"

I've always wondered the about the truth behind the idea of "need blind" selection for colleges, and I mean all colleges in general, not just Columbia. (although Columbia is where i applied ED). Are colleges really completely need blind or do the kids who dont apply for finaid have a bit of a leg up in admissions? I cant help but feel that your financial background comes into play at least a little in the final decision. what do you guys think?

btw i just finished my ED application so thats why im pondering things like this haha

I believe that they are truly need blind... which is not good for me.
