I'm a new yorker...I want a major in math or comp sci...how is stony brook truly, i've heard just about everything from its not great to its completely underrated...whats the truth?

based on studentsreview.com it seems that the majority dislike it and think it's too much of a commuter school, but i'm not sure exactly how truthful those review sites are.

All I hear is negative comments from alumni. I know someone who calls is a suitcase school, and that on weekends, it's a desert.

Doesn't really matter what way you look at it, if you want to stay in the area its one of the best for what you wanna do (math, comp sci), gourman rates it better than NYU for comp sci for undergrad

And the campus has changed A LOT from years past, with renovations and such....BTW I would say 35% of the campus has recently been rebuilt and renewed

The suitcase school stereotype is outdated; it's a great place and an image that isn't applicable anymore is holding SB's reputation back.

The math and comp-sci departments are top-notch. All of the comp-sci and math alumni I know have great jobs or are in really good grad programs now.

Pseudonym are you an SBU student currently?

Is SB any good for anything other than the science-y, techy sort of thing?

They do have D1 sports, and I hear music is good. Its mainly known for science if thats answers your Q.

Yeah, I'm currently at SB.

Bias for the win

Biased? Maybe. Don't really think so. If you ask me what I like least about SBU, I'll gladly tell you. If you asked me about one of our not-so-strong departments, I'd be honest. It just happens that math and comp-sci are both rated very highly, and the people I know in those departments have had very good experiences. And who would know better than a current Stony Brook student whether the suitcase school stereotype is outdated?

I'm pretty critical of my school when it's warranted.
