Tryin to transfer to UCLA or CAL...How does my situation look?

Okay, so I'm going to a CCC, and during my first semester (Fall 2006). I took

Stats - C
Astronomy - A
Cultural Anthropology -A
Macroeconomics -W

GPA - 3.2

Spring 2007

Freshmen Compositon - W
Philosophy - W
Macroeconomics - F

I messed up really bad because I was working 40 hours a week.

The weird thing is that on my unofficial transcript it says "Excluded from G.P.A, and my gpa is still a 3.2. Is it possibly because I repeated it?
Currently I am taking

Freshmen Composition
Sociology
Pyschology
Political Science

I've talked to my professors, and they told me I have high A's

so my GPA should be a 3.65 with 23 units completed

I am going to be taking 14 units in the summer

Now, my question is.. have i messed up really bad?

What GPA would be competetive? I'm trying to transfer by fall 2009.

What GPA would be a shoe in to an English major.

At first, I wanted to be a business major, but I've changed to english, so I would take macroeconomics again, but I've already completed the social science portion of the IGETC.

And does the scholars honors program help alot? Thank you

UCLA and Cal dont take a liken to F's, probably an auto reject if its part of your GPA.

However, if it truly is not part of your offical transcript, then you may still have a shot

I was wondering about getting into UCLA/CAL having the 'getting an F' situation as well. I got an F in 2 classes but repeated them for A's. I wonder if it is going to be impossible to get into these schools with that kind of record, even if I explain it in my essay or something. (also having the average admitted transfer student GPA for your major)

user_anton & themediocre... F's will not kill your chances to get into a UC. I had 2 F's my first semester at cc. I retook both classes (and didn't get academic renewal). I left school with a 2.7 GPA and was out for 5+ years.

I returned and had a 3.9 GPA for my new work making my Cum. GPA a 3.3.

So with 2 F's on my record (and a major amount of withdraws on my first attempt at college) I got into every UC I applied to (Cal, UCLA, Davis & Santa Cruz), as well as some Ivy league schools and liberal arts colleges.

You just have to be honest on your personal statement. Don't blame the grades on anything other than yourself. Take responsibility for your shortcomings and show that you've grown as a result of the bad grade(s). Turn your mistake into an asset and let them know how getting such a bad grade made you a more determined scholar.

I'm currently a 3rd year at Cal in the history department studying British Imperialism.

Don't worry I was the same have 6 W's on my transcript and I had 2 F's. You need to take the classes you got F's on again and petition so they can take them of your transcript. They won't even look at the W's. I won't be included in your gpa anymore! That's what I did and I got into UCLA with a 3.4

I am just accpeted to UCLA without repeating an F. I am repeating, but the decisopn came out before getting the new grade. So follow the advice from CalBear09 and do your best.

THANK YOU so much guys.. it feels really good finding out from people who experienced it..

I'm thinkin about repeating it, but the thing is, my major changed, so the class no longer has to do with my major. It never affect my GPA, that's the thing.. Should I still repeat it?

i did really poor fall 06.

sub 2.00 gpa

I still got into LA, but my GPA is decent. Above 3.5, which you should get to feel safe. UC's don't like to see F's but they do like to see improvement.

If the courses are removed from your academic record and don't affect your igetc or pre-req, don't bother to retake it.

"Grade Trend" is one of the main things they look at.

Thanks for the replies guys, its good to know I still have a chance. I plan to keep taking classes and apply the fall after next. This will give me time to finish pre-req's (alot for engineering), to raise my gpa and time to reflect true potential onto my future transcript.

Much appreciated!

wow. this stuff is really inspiring guys,
i didn't have a good first semester at sdsu..
but i improved second semester but i still got an F in philosophy
i'm pretty bummed out
but i may just transfer to CC and perhaps work to a UC
cause I know I can improve myself academically..

In short, because I have a meeting with a counselor to discuss transfer req’s and my spring courses, I would like to know what those who have transferred have to say about this:

I’m a community college student, who, in my first semester (3 semesters ago), had 2 F’s, a D, and a W. Both of my F’s I petitioned for and received academic renewal toward. However, the D (Speech 100) still remains.

My cumulative GPA is 3.41
UC Transferrable: 3.32

I’m taking 18 units this semester, and judging by the rigor of these classes, and my level of enjoyment in them, I def anticipate all A’s. This would bring my GPA up to 3.57

Basically, I would like to know whether the F’s will strongly affect my likelihood of being accepted to UCLA even though I didn’t retake them, and received academic renewal instead.

I would love to attend UCLA, and I am a Psych Major. I have all but one (Physics 100) of their pre-requisites completed for the psych major with a 4.0 in their major req’s so far.

Does anybody think I have a decent shot of being accepted to UCLA?

Here’s my unofficial transcript:

Summer 2008
General Psychology - A

Fall 2008
Intro to Business - A+
Humanities 1 - A
Physical Geography - A+

Winter 2009
English Writing - A-
Macroeconomics - A-
Financial Accounting 1A - A+

Spring 2009
English Writing 2 - A
Microeconomics - A
Financial Accounting 1B- A
Calculus 1B/1C - A (took at another school with semester system)

Summer 2009
Sociology 1 - A
Speech 1 - A

GPA: 3.94

I have a 3.889 gpa and im looking to transfer from Cal State San Marcos into their Media Studies program. I didn’t take the one math class required but I wrote them a plea stating I would most definitely take it during summer. I have all of my major prerequisites done and all of my other prerequisites to get into the school. Do you think my chances are still slim if I don’t have that math class?

ulacnaib why even post asking for chances ? … you’re going to get into either LA or Berk, and probably both, unless you’re missing pre reqs.

hooray for bump threads from september!

Even better when it’s originally a bump thread from April of 2008… :D

I have 3 w’s and an F but I am still doing my G.E. classes I’m a second year in college what are my chances of getting into UCLA?

and I’m a biology major none of the dropped classes are my major classes and neither is the F

I’m an out-of-state community college transfer. I’m not asking anyone to ‘chance me’. I just want to know if UC’s look at “improving grade trends”. During my first year and a half of college, I had great personal difficulties (easiest way to put it) and earned a GPA of 1.62. Now I am at a CC and have a GPA of 3.5 with 24 units. My 60 (probably ~70) units will be completed by this spring. If I earn a solid GPA of a 3.8/3.9, will the UCs look favorably upon that?

I’ve repeated classes that I previously failed, however since they weren’t at the same institution, I’m not sure if they’ll only count the repeated grades.

Also, how negatively would it affect my application if I don’t have all the required math courses (I’m a Financial Mathematics major for UCSB). I’ll have Calc I and II completed but I don’t know if I’ll be able to take Linear Algebra and such.

Do you think it would be worth it to apply to the UCs?
