Trying out for a cappella/musical theatre with little experience

Hi all! I really want to join an a cappella group and/or musical theatre cast in college.

I did choir from 3rd to 6th grade, sang in a summer camp a cappella group before eighth grade, and have only sung for fun since, although I did perform onstage with a friend in a talent show last year.

I think I could sing really well with training, but I want to work on my breathing technique and consistency; I tend to stop and start at random times or not sing with a powerful enough voice because I run out of air. I'd also like to be able to sing with my head voice. Of course I have many areas beyond these to improve, but I hope solidifying the basics will help me qualify for a group.

I'm currently a high school senior and I don't think my parents will let me take voice lessons this spring, so the only window I would possibly have with a singing teacher would be June to August, which is frankly not much time. I don't know if buying a voice lesson DVD or something would help in the meantime...

I would appreciate any advice pertaining to this subject, such as feedback on how difficult it is to get into college a cappella groups, what you think I should do, etc.

I have a fried who is thinking about doing theater at her college next year, but they told her mom that when non-theater majors or minors audition for plays, they “find it hard to take them seriously.” I guess they want more room in shows for people who are actually pursuing an acting career? I’m a bit worried about this because I’d like to continue acting in high school- luckily, I’m going to a different college in the fall that might be a bit nicer about it! Anyways, the best way for you to find out is contact the department in your school or talk to someone you know who attends.

Thanks for your answer! However, I wanted to start a plan now because I won’t know what college I’m going to until April.
