I'm a freshman, a little over half way through my first semester. My university has me in the "General Engineering" for the first semester, 14 credit hours, and I've all but decided to do Computer Engineering, but I need some advice here:

I'm (hopefully) on track for a 3.0 GPA here, I know that my only class I've had issues with is Calculus 1, but my chances of getting any higher than a low B are pretty much shot. I like my Professor, and my grades are turning around, but I've had trouble completing the online homework on time, my GSA is a jerk and I failed 2 calculus quizzes. I've been going to office hours, getting help/reviewing over bad assignments, and recently began going to quiz review sessions. I'm not bad at math, I've just never been ultra good at it. And before you ask, I don't drink, goof off at parties etc. I play video games and watch anime, but I also work and do my best to put my school work first. My other classes I probably have high B's and one A, and maybe another A from my midterm for intro to engineering, but thats yet to be seen. But the reasons I want to be a Computer Engineer is I'm both hardware and software inclined (I don't want to not work with hardware, so CS/SE isn't what I want) and I want to try and get a 3.4 GPA so I can get my Master's in ComE in five years of college, rather than six years. Any advice I can be given?

When I was a freshman I wanted to get a Master degree in CpE too, but I ended up switching back to CS and I will graduate a year late (I am supposed to graduate next Spring).

Don’t restrict yourself to a particular timeline. You may failed a class or two. Whatever the reason, don’t panic, it’s normal. Many great students I’ve seen either got a really bad grade or totally f**k up one semester. But they do amazing thing. I just want to remind younger fellows don’t worry so much about perfect 4.0. You have a long way to go.

With respect to CpE, the course work is pretty damn difficult. When you finished your first semester of Junior year, you can probably ask yourself whether you enjoy CS more or CpE or entirely EE. At that point, you probably will decide again whether you want to be in school for another year or not.

I rather work full time for my research right now, and apply to Google this summer. Classes I am taking right now are totally BS and boring. I like learning but I don’t want to learn from people who can’t pass on the basic knowledge to their own students. At that point, I think you will understand why staying at school for another year is tough.
You are going to hate your teachers. Their exams are either too simple or too hard because they don’t match what they teach you or they totally messed up the whole class, and text books don’t help you.

My advice: relax and chill. Ask the same question again when you finished your sophomore year and first semester of junior year. Also, get involved in something like a research lab or an internship or some CS/EE clubs. Reinforce your knowledge.
