What's the deal on that Wednesday before Thanksgiving break? Do they sometimes cancel classes later in the day so people can make flights? If not, will the professors be lenient if you miss that last class?
I'm trying to book my tickets now before they become impossible to find/muy expensive.

Also, might there be a lot of work assigned over the break, such that I would want to get back to MIT earlier than Sunday?

Most classes are still held on the day before Thanksgiving, particularly freshman classses. Upper-division classes are frequently cancelled, I think because they're smaller and the professors feel they can get away with it more easily. Still, a good 50%-75% of students skip class the day before Thanksgiving, even when class is still scheduled. It's college. They can't make you go to class.

There's usually the same amount of work assigned over Thanksgiving weekend as there is over any other weekend. I always liked getting back early on Sunday morning so I could do homework all day, but of course I'm a do-homework-on-Sunday sort of girl. Other people get back late and put off problem sets until later. (It's the end of term. You won't want to do homework anyway.)

Check with your coach if you're doing a sport, too - I know swimming has a mandatory morning practice on the wednesday before thanksgiving break
