I am looking to go either pre-business or pre-law. I am looking for a school for a school that will provide me with a fun yet intellectually satisfying environment.

PROS OF HARVARD
1.) international prestige
2.) placement into law firms/Wall Street
3.) top-notch professors

PROS OF GEORGETOWN
1.) internships in D.C.
2.) amazing poltical science/international relations department

PROS OF DUKE
1.) good social life/athletics
2.) fun student body
3.) good Public Policy program

Can anyone from Georgetown provide me some input regarding my decision? Financial Aid is not really an issue.

Interested in Law-Georgetown is one of only seven undergrad universities with a Supreme Court Justice and the US Solicitor General is an alumnus too.
And if you are ever in serious legal trouble, Brendan Sullivan, a GU law grad, is the best criminal defense lawyer in the US.

I don't think there's any question that the social life/ athletics/ "fun-ness" of Georgetown would be the same as, if not superior to Duke's.
Georgetown's strength as a school is in the balance that you'll find here. Students choose to come here with the understanding that they are not only going to receive an amazing degree, but also an incredible undergrad experience. I honestly don't think any other school can compete with the mix of academics, athletics, and social life that exists at Georgetown.

there is no point for thinking about this decision. it is so obvious that u should choose harvard.
no matter wat. even just for its reputation. everyone will choose that.
dont make a stupid decision while u r so smart man

wow whats written above could be the worst advice ever. you'll find next year when youre in college that you care a whole lot more about how happy you are with your overall experience (academics, social life, surroundings, environment, etc.) than what the name of the school is. i'm a second semester freshman (looking to transfer to gtown) at an ivy and i can tell you i would go anywhere right now where i would have a better time. so if you think you'll be happiest at harvard, then go. but your pro-con list doesn't suggest that you associate harvard with a fun atmosphere. anyway...choose wisely because you don't give up prestige and opportunities with any of your choices, but you may be sacrificing a lot in terms of your overall experience if you choose solely based on name.

I am student at Georgetown (and looking into law as well) and I can tell you that the difference between Harvard, Georgetown, and Duke is insignificant if you seek a post-graduate degree. If you are interested in taking political or think-tank internships during the year, come to Georgetown. If you're fratty, go to Duke.

I would obviously suggest Harvard or Duke over Georgetown if you were seeking a degree in any physical science or engineering curriculum, but if you want to study government or anything international, Georgetown is the best.

I think Cambridge/Boston is a lot cooler than DC, though. I was not interested in going to an Ivy League school because I am from the northeast and wanted to go somewhere a little different, and because I have always wanted to go to a Jesuit university.

What school at Georgetown were you accepted to?

Boy, get your mind out of the gutter. Harvard is the obvious answer, and eventhough you might not get taught by Professors or learn as much than you would at other schools, the meer name will get you through much of your life after all I would hire the Harvard guy over the Duke or Georgetown one...plus Harvard has major grade inflation so as long as you put effort you will get results, not guanteed at Duke or Georgetown.

"am looking to go either pre-business or pre-law. I am looking for a school for a school that will provide me with a fun yet intellectually satisfying environment."

harvard is near boston... u can definitely hv a fun time at boston. intellectual satisfaction? They all provide excellent education, but if you're asking for the best education? no need to ask..... pre-law? come'on..... plus if you really hate harvard and it's atmosphere that much.. xfering to another school is a piece of cake. Elgguj we are sophisticated... we are just more practical...

i'm not saying he/she shouldnt choose harvard...but saying that its the automatic, don't think about it at all, you-have-to-choose-it-because-its-harvard argument is dumb.

and if you're talking about best education in terms of actual classes....my bet is harvard is not the best of the 3. Harvard classes are supposedly taught by a lot of TAs....TAs are a mixed bag, and by that I mean they're mostly not so great with a few rare good ones.

I'm going to have to disagree--Harvard's classes are all TAUGHT by professors but supplemented by TAs. And the TAs I've met are pretty brilliant (PhDs studying to be profs at Harvard undergrad/law).

Concerning fun, I've heard mixed reports about Harvard. Students do have fun, but I hear there's an intensive amount of work inside/outside the classroom
^I took a class there, but I can't comment definitively on student life during the year(: Def ask a Harv student about that.

One Georgetown student was saying that he chose GTown over Duke because Durham can't rival D.C. at all, so I would take Duke out of the list.

As for Harvard v. Georgetown, you simply can't go wrong. Both have amazing poli sci/intl relations programs, and both have the amazing city atmosphere. If you are looking at it ranking-wise, Harvard is on top, even in intl relations (for undergrad at least). But Georgetown does provide many opportunities considering it is in the center of it all.

Stuff to consider:

Weather: Boston is MUCH colder than DC
Campus: Georgetown's campus doesn't have any public roads that run through it, but I believe Harvard's does
Pre-professional: Georgetown does guarantee acceptance to its law school for a few juniors each year, and they are building what looks to be an amazing business building

I bet there is other stuff, but definitely visit and GOOD LUCK

Than you so much for your help guys/girls! Unfortunately, I have narrowed down my college choices to Duke and Harvard at this point. I'm going to visit both these colleges and then make a final decision.

Georgetown is a FANTASTIC school and SFS is a great program but financially it is much more expensive for me than these other schools and I don't believe it has the reputation that Harvard and Duke have on Wall Street should I take that route. I'm trying to keep my options open.
