Trying to figure out which dorm is best for me

I'd like somewhere quieter than Jester, but still sociable. It'd be cool to have a kitchen, a la Whitis Court or Brackenridge. I'd prefer co-ed to all girls, and I don't want to pay the higher price for Duren or San Jac.

Is it really that hard to study in Jester or is that only if you're easily distracted by a party?

I'm going to probably apply for Honors dorms as #1 even though I'm not in honors

IMHO, it is too late to apply for Honors, it is already January.

I am not sure that you will get your first choice at this point, unless you apply for residential FIG and get accepted, then you’ll live in Whitis for sure.
Or if Jester is your first choice then you can get it.

All rooms in smaller dorms usually go to

 1. returning students first, they have priority and can even chose which room they want to live in.
 2. freshmen on first come first served basis, which means you have to apply really early to get you first choice dorm.

I sent in my $50 housing fee in September, shouldn’t that have been plenty early enough to get a good dorm?

September is early enough.

Non-honors students in Honors dorms are usually from colleges that don’t have Freshmen Honors programs. They are accepted for diversity purposes. :)

Well I’m applying to the College of Education, and they don’t have one so maybe I’ve got a chance?

[Honors Living Community | School of Undergraduate Studies](http://www.utexas.edu/ugs/uhc/residences)

Decisions about assignments to the honors living community are made jointly by the Division of Housing and Food Service and the university’s honors programs.

Students who have outstanding academic records but who are not in one of the university’s honors programs may be considered for assignment to the honors hall.

I wouldn’t say that it’s that hard to get a room in a smaller hall, housing tries to keep the residence halls 30% returning students and 70% freshman. Most people move off campus after their first year anyway.

Jester gets a bad reputation, but I’ve been in Jester East for two years, it’s not party central. If people are truly partying loud enough to be a problem, they’ll get busted. Quiet hours start at 10 pm and are enforced. There are also several (3 or more) study lounges on each floor, so it can be a great place to study.
