Ok so I currently in the process of rushing the Sigma Tau frat, and trying to get a bid. I am trying to find ways to increase my chance of getting a bid. I attended 2 events, a "graffiti party" and a toga party, and everyone seems to like me so far. The bid day is sometime this weekend I think. I have a few questions tho.

First of all, how do they determine who gets a bid? I heard the brothers of the frat vote on each person.

Also, I am attending another party tomorrow night. I had an idea to ask if I could say something to everyone, and then give a little speech type of thing, about how I've had some great times with them already, how I am definately gonna join if i get a bid, and how I would love to have their votes. Would this be a good idea? like would it show them I am really commited and interested, or would it make me look desperate?

Do they know you're rushing? Have these been rush events or just open parties? Most of the time they give you an opportunity to register or sign up as a rush, so they know to consider you. If you've done this, you're probably mostly set. It certainly wouldn't hurt to tell the president or rush chair that you're interested, but you don't need to write out some formal list of the reasons you want to, just tell him it's something you're interested. Interest is certainly something that's considered, because fraternities want (among other things) people who will be committed brothers.
What always turned me off the most from otherwise decent rushes was when they got presumptuous and considered themselves part of the frat before bids even came out, or weren't respectful guests in the house. So don't do either of those, but it doesn't sound like you have.

yea i signed up already with them, I told the vice president I was interested last week, and he told me to come last thursday to meet the brothers, and sign up, then stay after for a party where we invited one of the sororities over, there were some girls from there who were rushing too. Last night, it was basically the same thing, except at one point I was called up to a private room with 4 brothers, and they gave me an interview with questions such as what dd you think a pledge is, and why do you want to join us, and what can you provide for us? I thought i did pretty well with it, and they said that well see if I get a bid or not. I guess the only thing to do is attend the last event tommarow night, and then wait and see if they give me a bid or not.

Just be cool, meet a lot of the guys, don't creep on any girls (you may not know who is a girlfriend or a really close friend of the chapter), don't get excessively drunk - but be sure to have a good time.

Fraternity members are looking for guys that fit in, and that will be fun to be around for the next 4 years. Any kind of sketchy behavior during rush could be a marker for other issues that may underlie the surface.

As far as HOW chapters decide bids - varies alot, even from year to year depending on how the rush chairs wish to handle it. Some chapters may have an all-chapter vote on you, other chapters may leave it up to the rush chairs to make the final decision, many will be somewhere in between these options combining elements of both.
