Trying to get into Georgia Tech as a Transfer student; REALLY need responses :/

For personal reasons, I really need to get into this school.
I’m down to study my ass off, etc, to get into as a transfer student. Anyway, here’s the info you need;

My freshmen year in Rutgers University starts soon. I am trying to double major in Computer Science and Math (or I was) but again, something happened and I really now want to transfer into Georgia Tech Computer Science, which is a HUGE jump… (rank 32 computer science to rank 9 computer science).

The problem is, my highschool years weren’t too great.
I had around a 3.3 GPA (unweighted so 4.0 was max), but my highschool rank was pretty good (around #60-70 in the states).
So if I were to transfer after my first year, trying to get into Georgia tech as a sophomore, I’m not too sure how much they’ll look into my highschool years.

As of volunteering, I did not do too much in highschool. I did the minumum required to graduate (around 60).
My SAT scores were only around 2050-2100, and my new SAT around 1400.
As for classes (not sure if this counts) I took pretty difficult classes, Calc III, AP Stats, AP Physics B and C, etc.
And for extra curricular, I did many sports, but I guess I kind of stuck to volleyball the most (2 years, ended up JV captain).

Not sure if my high school years will count since I only will be going to one year of Rutgers.

Anyway, for college, I’m definitely going to be studying my ass off (as I was kinda lazy in highschool). Trying to aim for a 3.8 GPA. Now my question is…

since Georgia Tech does a hollistic review on transfer applicants, should I be volunteering a lot over my college years? And participate in a lot of activities, etc.? Or what else should I do?

Going from Rutgers Computer Science to Georgia Tech Comp sci, as I said, is a huge jump obviously. Should I just try transferring mid sophomore year so I don’t risk the chances of them looking at my highschool years?

My chances are pretty low, right? Considering it’s from Rutgers…

You are not getting responses because the information you are looking for is easily available on the Tech website and through Google: http://admission.gatech.edu/transfer

You will see that Tech does not consider high school grades or standardized test scores when evaluating transfer applicants. Tech does care that you have taken the requisite university courses for your major and that you have obtained competitive grades in those courses. You will need to complete 30 credit hours including all required courses and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3 to transfer into the CS major. That said, you would likely need a higher GPA to gain admission.

So maybe around a 3.9 GPA?

Bro get a +3.6 and get as many of the transfer required/recommended classes done that you can and then hope you get in. You’ll either get in or won’t. You most likely won’t but you might. Accept it and move on.

As a transfer student you have to gain admission to the program within gt. You have to complete all required perquisite courses dictated by the department to be considered. You need to match those classes to rutgers based on the transfer tables. GT computer science is a very sought after department making it even harder. You are also out of state where admissions numbers are lower. Also keep in mind most gt students do not graduate in four years. They go by 1st year to 6th year rather than freshman, sophmore etc.

Hey darkereuro, I totally understand what you’re about right now! I’m trying to transfer there in order to join my twin sister and older brother. I had a better high school resume sheet than you but really, who cares? We’re out of high school now, that stuffs over. Don’t let it drag you down!

Volunteering I would say is something to be encouraged. Good life experience that also looks good on a college app? Of course.

Best of luck!

My son transferred. We read the transfer requirements very carefully and followed them to a T. If your Rutgers classes are not already approved, you need to send in a detailed syllabus of each clsss. Ask your professor for the syllabus if it is not provided for you online. This is a very important step in gaining admission. We made an appointment early on (about a year ahead) and met with the admissions counselor who was assigned to my son. My son went with questions and let him know why he wanted into GT CS. He asked for suggestions to improve chances of admission. My son tried to exceed all the requirements.
Besides doing the above, try to get A’s in all your classes. Have you tutored your fellow students in any science or math class? That can count as volunteer work and you can work that into your schedule. Start looking at the essay questions now. Best wishes to you!
