Trying To Get Into Photojournalism

I'm thinking about photojournalism as my career, but I don't really know where to start as far as what classes to take and what colleges are decent in those subjects. My grades aren't amazing, I've got around a 3.65 GPA and I got a 31 on the ACT, so the amount of colleges I'd be able to get into are limited. Any help would be good, thanks.

NYU? There's not a place in the world better for photography than NYC.

I don't think my grades would get me into NYU, unless it's not as selective as I thought.

I'd say NYU is a high-to-mid match going by your grades and test scores (assuming you've been taking AP classes). You've got a pretty good shot.

I've been taking all the AP classes except for math, which I'm terrible in.

I just looked at the tuition, and it would be $47,000, which pretty much rules it out unless they give out a ton of scholarships.

They give merit aid I believe. I bet you could get a good bit of financial aid. I'd just go ahead and apply there. It couldn't hurt.

I'll definitely try there. Do you know if OSU is any good at photography or any of the other majors needed for photojournalism? I live in Ohio and the in-state tuition would be nice.

No idea, to be honest. I know OSU's honors college is supposedly good but their regular school allegedly doesn't stack up to the likes of UW-Madison, Umich, etc. What sort of budget are you looking at? You might want to look at Emerson College in Boston. The price is fairly reasonable for a private liberal arts school, and its education revolves around communication in the arts; it's one of the best colleges in the nation for film and photography. The price is around 37k overall, and with your grades I'm sure you could get some aid (I think they're merit-based, don't quote me on that). I'd look into it, and Boston is also a great place for photography.

I don't really have a set figure on prices, but I don't want to be too far in debt since photojournalism isn't the most profitable career. On Emerson's page in Collegeboard I didn't see a photography major, is it just not listed?

Hm I assumed they had one because their film department is so huge. You may want to read about it on their website. I would but I'm about to go to bed.

I don't know about photojournalism specifically, but I know Ohio University has a very good journalism program. You might want to look into that.

start taking pictures YESTERDAY, and submit them to whomever will take them

find a local paper, go to whatever events you can, take pictures and send to the sponsors as "gifts"

get a decent REAL camera if you can afford it

look in your city for classes for teens, many places have them

what city are you in

OU has a reputation of being a party school and kind of a place where people go if they don't get into OSU down here. Plus, it's only 45 minutes away from where I like and I'd like to get farther away.

I plan on getting a Canon Digital Rebel XTi, would that be good enough for a college photography class?

Western Kentucky University has an unbelievable photojournalism program. It wins the Hearst competition almost every year, beating out the big-name schools. The professors help you get internships at newspapers and magazines across the country while you are a student, and then help you get jobs when you are ready to graduate. Plus, the tuition would be very reasonable, even for out of state.

A friend's daughter is at Mizzou for photojournalism.

b08, don't forget to budget for lenses - they make a huge diffrence! Cost of my husband's camera was minor compared to what the lenses cost him (he has a Canon). He is not a journalist.

BB.

^ I second mizzou...aka University of Missouri at Columbia. I have a fellow high school classmate who is there majoring in Photojournalism. She thinks it's awesome! It is one of the most reknowned journalism schools in the country. Check it out. The entrace level isn't steep but you must demonstrate a significant interest in photojournalism as well as a portfolio.

I'm not sure how much I like the location of Missouri University, but I'll look into it. Does anybody know is Ohio State is any good at photography?

Mizzou has become a "hot" school around here of late.

About your question about your camera..the Rebel is used by quite a few professional photographers, and the photography classes that I've been in have not specified any specific cameras, only types- i.e. digital or traditional.
