Trying To Get Into Photojournalism

my D has a rebel and LOVES LOVES LVOES it, her class at ACademy of Art University requested fil cameras, but she needed digital for yearbook, so she got a digital, I am know looking for a decent flash, the charger thing is expensive. but sigh, she needs it

Rochester Institute of Technology has one of the top photography programs. They offer a BFA in photograpy with a photojournalism option - not sure if you need a portfolio or not.

Seriously, look into Syracuse University. They have an outstanding Journalism/communications school (Newhouse School of Publich Communication)and an outstanding art and design school. Their Newhouse school of Public Communication also has photography. In my opinion, it is one of the best in the country for this.

Another good alternative is RIT. Although RIT doesn't have photojournalism or even journalism per se, they are repuded to have the best photogrphy department in the world and have all kinds of courses in photography. Both Bauch and Lomb and Eastman Kodak supports the school with the latest equipment. Check out the RIT offerings.

Is journalism a good class to take for photojournalism? I haven't found any sites that go in-depth on what you need to take for the career, but a journalism class seems like it would mostly be the writing kind, but I don't know much on the subject.

UT-Austin also has a reputable photojournalism program - however, it has become next to impossible to get in as an out-of-stater (your stats are worth checking into it, though). Out of state tuition used to be reasonable - don't know what it is now though. When H and I met, it was cheaper for him to attend there as an OOS, than stay in CT and pay in-state tuition.

According to their webpage, "The photojournalism program, which leads to a bachelor of fine arts degree in professional photographic illustration, provides an education in both photographic technique and craft. Since 1979, many graduates of this program have earned professional acclaim. Ten of our alumni have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for photojournalism."

One strength of RIT is its internships. My DD worked with some photographers at a magazine in NYC and they said RIT was highly regarded. I know a magazine publisher in VA who recruits regularly at RIT.

RIT's program is through the photo dept but it's definitely possible to minor in Communications (my DD is a Graphic Design major and a Communications minor).

Are there any schools strong in both photography and journalism? Chicago is my dream city so any in there would be nice.

RIT gives good money for merit aid (NYU DOES NOT), plus their tuition is lower than other private schools, and they like students from states other than NYS.

Do you know which accredited schools would be good matches for me?
