Currently I'm trying to get off of several wait lists. At least two of them have asked me to send them my most recent grades. However, I have been ill for the last two months, and am currently homebound. All of my grades for the third quarter are incomplete because I am behind on my work. Should I tell the colleges this, or will it look bad? Should I send them the transcript?

Oh wow, you must be really sick to have not been in school for two months! I'm so sorry and wish you a speedy recovery.

I can't say what you should do, I just feel bad for you!

Maybe speak to your teachers and see if they can submit your grades as of a certain date (the last one you were in school) and explain that in a brief letter to Admissions. Ask a teacher you really like who hasn't written you a letter of rec. yet to do so regarding you during senior year. I hope you get better!

Have your college counselor send in a letter re this.

Thank you so much for your concern. I'm going to speak to my guidance counselor to see if I could do that...

I don't mean to sound terse but what is the point of trying to get off several wait lists? At this stage in the game, aren't students pursuing the wait list of their first choice? Ultimately you can only choose one (and colleges who's wait list you pursue for the most part want to understand that they are the one). I was under the impression that if wait listed you pursue your top choice and deposit at your top choice among acceptances.

Because of how extremely unlikely it is to get off any wait list? If I get off the wait list at any of these schools I plan to go to them...

Colleges are pretty understanding about extreme illness. One of my friends was a Morehead scholar and ended up with a double concussion from soccer... For a few months, she had issues with walking in a straight line, let alone hacking her heavy AP load. Her scholarship was not rescinded, she recovered just fine, and UNC was very understanding about everything.

Getting off a wait list might be a bit more difficult, because you're not really able to make a stellar appearance to swing the scales in your favor, but they're not going to count it against you. Just keep expressing interest and have your college counselor or guidance counselor write letters on your behalf explaining that you're homebound and ill.

Tell them that your sick, what other choices do you have?

My guidance counselor said she would e-mail the colleges and send a cover letter along with my transcript. I just found out one of my grades was updated...to a C. Ugh.

aww... try to email your teachers if you're not in school yet requesting that they calculate your grades pre-falling ill.
