Keep up your grades if you slack at all it will look really bad. The most important thing for you is to do really well in the congressional interviews without them everything else you have going for you doesn't matter. Be prepared and be very knowledgable about the Academy because my congressmen asked me a lot of specifics about the school and it looks really bad if you don't know very much.

why did you post this ?

usafa2010: what was your gpa?

Yeah man, you might want to bolster that gpa a little. Other than that, I think you're on track.

my gpa was really bad it was a 90%

my strengths came in other areas like being the captain of my track and cross country team, and my brother's a USAFA grad and my dad's an army officer.

usafa2010, a 90% isn't "really bad" at all. It's a little below the average for each class, but it is by no means "bad". I've heard of people getting in with mid 80's. FutureUSAFApilot, at least maintain your grades-it's not over for you if you don't bump up your GPA .1 points. You'll never know your chances until you apply, so it's impossible to say exactly what the grade cutoff for each person is every year. Just go for it, and give yourself the best chance possible.

I don't think you should worry too much about it. Keep in mind they also consider your geographical residence, medical examinations, and personality. And be careful on who you ask for a recommendation to. I was watching this documentary in the Discovery Times Channel on how they selected appointees. There was this one admissions officer who turned down a kid with a 4.0 gpa because a teacher wrote on his recommendation that he sometimes had a bad attitude(well the kid might not have a bad attitude but the teacher saw him go through a bad day once or something). When I ask for a teacher's recommendation I first ask them whether he or she thinks I got what it takes to be in a service academy. If there some hesitation or if they say I need some improvement on other things, then I wouldn't let them write my recommendation. If they say "oh definitely!" and something really positive, then I would let them write my recommendation for me.

Overall, don't worry about the competition of other candidates and how you measure up against them. Just focus on what you need to do and do it well to the best of your abilities and the competition will take care of itself.

I think ACT said the average "admited student" at USAFA had around a 3.8 GPA. If that is accurate, I do not know. So, I would try to bring your GPA up a little bit...and make Eagle! From what I have heard, Eagle is a big plus.

3.8 weighted or unweighted?

Probably with weights taken into consideration. I know some schools do not weight (like my HS), but others do. If your HS does, then USAFA will most likely look at the Weighted one; if it doesn't, they will just look at your unweighted but also take the difficulty of your courses into consideration.

Yeah, they take all of that into consideration- they have a national database of high schools and they are able to compute "their own gpa" from the database that takes into account school rank, size, etc.

cool thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, some schools it's harder to get a good rank. For example, my brother graduated this year, and the top 10% of his class which is a ALOT of seniors (2 schools worth because the HS split in half this year but all seniors stayed in one school... long story) but anyway, the top 10% ALL have 4.0's UNWEIGHTED. Some had 5.0's weighted I think.
Pretty amazing.
