Trying to help a young man to play his sport in college

Hi all,

Can you recommend any low D2 men volleyball schools for my young friend? His stats are not great due to his dad’s illness for the past two year and his death two months ago. I would assume nothing higher than a 3 on gpa and he recently dropped out from IB. He definitely needs help to pay for college either with FA or some athlete scholarship. Many thanks!

D3 as well since he could probably get FA since there’s basically no financial support once his dad died. Mom has no jobs.

Good for you for trying to help your young friend - sounds like he has had a rough go. Unfortunately a mens volleyball scholarship probably won’t be his salvation. VB is primarily a womens sport at the college level. At the D2 level, for example, there might be over 300 womens VB programs with 8 scholarships apiece, for men it’s more like a dozen programs with 4.5 apiece. D3 of course offers no athletic aid.

My thought is that better FA opportunities will be available based on his family circumstances and need. Good luck

That makes sense! Thanks and I will look into some D3 schools for him!
