Hello, I’m trying to decide which college I should attend between Oregon State, Colorado State, University of Vermont, Northern Arizona University, University of Nevada Reno, and Humboldt State. I’m from an hour north of San Francisco, CA, want to study something environmental, and interested in watching D1 sports. If you have any insights (partying, weather, location, etc.) or recommendations it would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
CSU
OSU
UVM. Just because it’s an awesome place to go to school and outdoors orientation. But kind of hard to compete with the outdoors lifestyle and environmental studies at Colorado.
Wow, congratulations. Flagstaff and Burlington are two of my favorite small cities (along with Asheville, NC). I loved Fort Collins too, just don’t know it as well. UVM is just a short walk to downtown Burlington, which is great, primarily Church Street, a pedestrian mall, with lots of restaurants, bars, etc. and the Lake Champlain waterfront, where there are stunning sunset views over Lake Champlain toward the Adirondacks. It is very, very cold. It is strong in environmental studies. It does get lots of OOS students, which I think can be good, I think, for an OOS student. The main sport will be basketball.
I’ve gotten to know UNR pretty well in recent years. I know a couple of people who are doing amazing environmental things there, including one in the sciences and one not. I think the administration and faculty do a great job. It’s actually in an incredible area. You do get some big-time football and basketball, an urban campus if that’s okay.
Anyway, lots of great choices, which one appeals most to you? They offer a lot, and, to me, are really all in interesting locations. Honestly, would you get out of bed to go to a 9 o’clock class on a very cold, icy morning in Burlington? I actually think that is an important question to ask yourself. How important is travel for you? UVM is far, and some of the others might be a long drive. For YOU, would a more urban option (Reno) be preferable, or a college town, like OSU and CSU, or more of a small town environment, like Flagstaff and UVM? You probably know Humboldt pretty well. One of mine visited a friend there recently, and I looked it up, but don’t know too much about it otherwise. Good luck!
