I got accepted into the college of education and I will be a freshmen this fall. I am trying to figure out what dorm would best fit me and also which dorms are just a no haha :) Thanks for the help!!

This late in the year you might not have your first choice. That said, if you want new or semiprivate bathrooms, go Middlebrook. St. Paul, Bailey. East Bank, Comstock.

Absolute NO: Pioneer, Centennial.

Pioneer doesn’t have AC (Half of Bailey and Sanford don’t have AC), is old, narrow, and quite plainly, disgusting. Centennial has one of the worst dining halls on campus. Since Pioneer dining hall closes on weekends, and Frontier and Middlebrook don’t have dining halls, Centennial gets hit hard on Saturday and Sunday.

Middlebrook is on the west bank and DOES have a dining hall. Actually most think its the best dining hall at UMN. Middlebrook has nice 2 bedroom dorms in which 2 rooms share the bathroom across the hallway. Middlebrook is “over the bridge” so it is not as convenient and is a long walk to/from the East Bank although you can take the campus bus. Middlebrook is also quieter, which is a plus or minus depending on your personality and what you are looking for. S was an honor student there his freshman year. He enjoyed it, but chose to stay at Comstock for his sophomore year as it was closer to classes and to Coffman. Coffman is the typical dorm where 20 so so rooms share a bathroom (one of men/one for women).

Most freshman live in one of the “super block” dorms which are pioneer, centennial, frontier and one I can’t remember. Some have the reputation as being more “Party dorms”…check old threads here and you’ll probably come across more information.

I agree with this:

Absolute NO: Pioneer, Centennial

I was at Frontier first year, which was pretty good for a freshman dorm. No major complaints except that the food at Centennial/Pioneer is not very good. It’s also nice to be in a freshman only dorm the first year, because everyone is new and wants to make new friends.

I assume you’re going to be on East Bank much more than West Bank being in CEHD, so I’d strongly recommend Sanford.

Sanford is really nice, the location is great (right next to a bus stop and Dinkytown), and the freshman only side has AC. The food is really good, roughly neck and neck with Middlebrook, which has the other best dining hall on campus.

Seriously, go Sanford! You’ll thank me later.

If you can’t get Sanford, here’s how I would rank your choice:

Sanford > Frontier > Middlebrook > Comstock > The Rest
