So basically, I've been a part of the newspaper as early as you can get accepted at my school(sophomore year) and although I love it, I'm really more passionate about creative writing. So I was thinking I'd really love to start a literary magazine! At my school, newspaper is a full year course during the day, but I figured the lit mag would just be an extracurricular activity. Here's the problem though: how do I get the funding for it?

I just began planning to start the lit mag now, so I haven't talked to any teachers/principal yet...my school used to have one years ago and it's really good about not censoring what we write in our newspaper, so I don't think I'll have a problem about starting one.

But the newspaper gets its funding since it is a class, and in the midst of a bad economy/school budget cuts how would I go about getting funding for the magazine?

I suggest looking for people who support your idea and asking for donations to fund it. A fundraiser maybe?

How much time can you invest in this endeavor? What grade are you in?

I have done something similar and managed to secure $1200 in start-up funding.

@Laurier oh wow, how did you secure that funding? Just from showing your school your idea? I go to a public school who has some financial problems so I don’t think they’d be able to secure that much money for an extracurricular activity
I’m a sophomore currently, but I planned on starting the literary magazine the beginning of my junior year! I just wanted to get the plans/outlines for it sorted out, so I could get the approval of my principal before junior year.

As far as a fundraiser, I’m stuck on what to do that would raise enough money.

For fundraising our lit mag had a used book sale last year. People donated books and then they sold them…you could also include used DVDs/Video Games. Our newspaper funds itself by selling pizza and candy after school. The band does bottle/can drives. Just be resourceful!
