Trying to Stay Awake!

Hey! So I'm not a college student yet (HS senior) but I have a question for you college students....

How do you stay awake during lectures?

I take double period classes (1.5 hours long) and I sometimes have problems staying awake!

Do you guys have any tricks to stay awake& attentive in class?

Caffiene pills like nodoze.

the caffiene is cola or coffee doesn’t seem to affect me, but nodoze works. My friends and I used it in the army.

I bring something to drink, that helps. If it’s permissible maybe some sort of non-disruptive snack if it’s a REALLY tough class to stay awake in-- I used to have MASSIVE lecture that was three hours long and the last class of the week, so I’d bring a granola bar or something to get me through.

screw nodoze, don’t take that unhealthy crap. 5 hour energies honestly are low sugar, contain virtually nothing but vitamins, and are perfectly healthy for you as ong as you don’t take a lot of them in one sitting like a psycho.

Also…getting sleepy in 90 minute classes? You’ll have to get over that by the time you reach college, ALL classes are 90 minutes… or more. Except for certain gym classes then they only last a manditory 60 minutes but you can stay for 90. For some of your harder classes it won’t be uncommon to see them breach 3 hours, sometimes more. My chem class was 90 minutes of class and up to 2.5 hours of lab depending on the complexity of the experiment.

Seriously though, 5 hr energy, DON’T abuse it (coming from a guy who takes 1 a day this last semester) you’ll be fine.

Um…that might be true at your school, but at my school, most classes are either 50 minutes or 75 minutes. I’m actually pretty sure that 90 minute classes don’t exist, and classes longer than that are either 2-3 hour labs once a week, or 3 hour lecture once a week. Also, in the long 3 hour classes, a break is given halfway through, or the prof teaches straight through but ends early.

Anyway…

As strange as it might sound, I color my notes (highlight)…the more tired/bored I am, the more highlighting there is in my notes because it gives me something to do while also making me pay more attention to the lecture.

gym classes what the ****

A 2 ounce bottle of 5 Hour Energy contains 138 milligrams of caffeine.

A No Doz pill contains 200 mg of caffeine.

a mountain dew = 55mg

But you can break up a caffiene pill. anyways, what about 10 hour classes, or 24 hour shifts
?

Caffeine is horrible idea, yes it will work but then you will crash later on. Get at least 8 hours of sleep, eat fresh fruits and vegetable, and exercise. If you do get sleepy during lecture have something to munch on like some granola bars or some carrots.

To be honest I wasn’t very good about this. I had some classes where I would start to doze off and sometimes I’d semi-hallucinate. As in I would be in a math class after a history class and my brain would try to synthesize the two things at the same time leading to some odd/interesting results. I simply can not sit and listen to someone talk for extended periods of time, even now.

Anyway I just kept my computer out and goofed off with it all class. I figured a distracted, awake me was better than an asleep me.

Thank you for the tips so far!

Well I don’t sleep much so that is probably why I doze off in that class, but I only do it every once in a while. & I asked you guys for help since I know in college lectures can be much longer than 1.5 hours.

Do you guys have perhaps tricks that do not involve the consumption of caffeine? It doesn’t seem healthy to me to be taking in large doses of caffeine frequently.

Drink water. Eat Fruits and Veggies and get enough sleep like that guy said above. Of course this doesn’t always happen. Try to stay away from sugary snacks. You’ll get a surge of energy but then you’ll crash and life will suck. Snack on peanuts.

Get enough sleep at night.

Just have something to drink with you. Even water is fine.

^Honestly, I prefer ice water to coffee for staying awake. Coffee puts me to sleep.

Have something to do while you take notes. I took a coloring book, as childish and unintelligent as that may seem.

make an intricate doodle!

on a more serious note, I didn’t have any 90 minute or 3 hour classes, but I still have a tip. If it’s a lecture class, try to read or at least skim the textbook section your professor is covering before lecture. It’s a lot easier to stay engaged when you actually know what he is talking about. The worst orgo lectures for me were those where I had absolutely no clue what he was talking about so I just wrote down everything he said (hoping I could figure it out later on) and tried to stay awake. XD Ahh, those damn hydrogens never stopped coming out of my a**. (Lol, I hope someone got the reference).

Pay attention, ask questions, and sit up front. If nothing else, fear will keep you awake.

Get enough sleep every night.

I tend to doze off in all large lectures no matter how long the class is. I found that making lists of random stuff (i.e. things I have to do today, things I’m excited for, etc) would keep me awake, is relatively effortless, and I can still listen to the lectures without being too distracted. Sitting way up front in classes works well too, because you don’t want to embarrass yourself in front of your professors.
