trying to transfer but rough freshman year

Hi everyone!
I just finished my freshman year of college and I absolutely hate the school I am going to, mostly due to teacher interaction and teaching style. I have had a really tough transition both academically and mentally. My GPA is probably around a 2.5 right now, which is no where near where it was in high school (between a 3.5 and 3.6). I developed a mental disorder that made my grades suffer significantly. This is all really embarrassing to me, but how can I transfer to another school with this GPA? Does my high school GPA help any? What types of schools could I apply to? Is there any place that I could explain the many things that went wrong with my freshman year on a transfer application that will basically make my grades not matter? Any help would be great. Thank you!

A 2.5 won’t be competitive for most colleges for transfer, and some even have a minimum of a 3.0. The rule of thumb is the more time you spend in college, the less your high school record and standardized tests matter. If you apply in the spring next year, you will have an opportunity to increase your GPA with the fall semester, but your high school stats will be weighed less. There is a section on the Common App that allows you to write extra information with explaining your grades, illness, and other situations, but I am not sure how much help that is going to be.

I suggest transferring to a community college for one year and getting your GPA up. Some state schools also have a transfer agreement with community colleges. A community college might also help you transition into a college environment without being fully immersed in it.

I know if may seem like the end of the world right now, but trust me you’ll be fine. I know plenty of people that went from college to CC and now are at a very good school and doing well.
