Trying To Transfer For Spring 2013

I am currently a student at a local community college in Nashville, and have been for a year. My freshman year of college I was at a private university in North Carolina. Needless to say, it wasn't the right fit, so I came home to stay in school and get my act together. The reason the school didn't fit was because it was too small, and I suffered from extreme depression. My grade point average fell to a 2.3ish, because of the depression. By the end of the school year I was considered disability because of it. I am better now, and have raised my GPA to a 3.2, and by the end of this term I will have a 3.7. I have gotten majority of my general eds out of the way, and am focusing on finishing those.

The schools I want to apply to are:

University of Houston
Syracuse University
Emerson College
Duquesne University
American University
Virginia Commonwealth University

I want to study Communications/Journalism. I was very active in clubs in high school along with volunteer work. However, I'm not sure that matters now. I am planning on joining a club or two in the fall, and start volunteering at a local hospital. I will also be working. I know this sounds a lot, but I'm going to try to divide my time out. I'm really set on transferring for the Spring.

I guess the questions comes down to:

1.What should I do to make my application stand out?

2.How do most transfers pay for tuition? (I've already looked into scholarships at these schools, but I was wondering what other transfers did.)

3.For Transfer students that transferred in the Spring, was the transition hard?

Has anyone else had parental concerns about their wanting to transfer?

Thank you so much, and I really appreciate your help.

this needs a bump. looking for similar answers, specifically syracuse U with a pretty low GPA
