trying to transfer to UC Berkeley majoring in media studies

I really want to try to apply to UC Berkeley from a community college in 2012 fall.. And so far i just found out that I only have about 3.0 GPA.. But if i manage to get all As in my summer classes, I will have a 3.27 GPA.. So when I apply to UCs in the fall, will I have to use that GPA on my applicants, like, will they see that GPA right away? I'm starting to feel hopeless..because my GPA will be that low when i apply.. I heard we will be able to update our GPA in January, when we finish the fall courses( when i could manage to have a 3.50 by then), but will they deny to read my applicants before we can update my GPA...!? i'm in the end of my first year of community college(Fall 2012), and I'll have 60 units by the end of Spring 2013. I'm also wondering if Media studies at Berkeley is really hard to transfer to? I also will start working on my personal statement in the summer to be ready for it.. by the way, do they need me to fill out my SAT score on my app? because i have never taken it when I was in high school..

I was just accepted to Cal for Media Studies. They will not consider Winter and Spring’s grades after you submit your application, even though you do submit an update. However, Cal does give a really great holistic review of every applicant, so you do have a chance!

No, SAT scores are not necessary for UC transfer applicants.

If you can get your GPA to a 3.5 after Fall you’ll have a chance. Have a back up plan though.

What do you mean by they will not consoder my Winter and Spring’s grades ?? and don’t I submit the gpa of all the classes I took, and then update the fall grades in January? And yes, I will have to apply to other UCs and csu for backup… but Cal is really my top choice of UC :/

He means that they won’t take Winter and Spring grades form next year into admission consideration. Nothing past next Fall will be included in your GPA as they will start evaluating them in the winter and won’t be able to see your other grades yet. They will still see what classes your taking of course and will consider that as well. But they won’t see your Winter and Spring (2013) grades until after you’re accepted.

Okk thank you !! so I don’t even need to put my sat score on the application right. Because I’ve never taken it before. If I’d be required to fill out a "score " on that session… I would have to take it…

Yes, UCs do not consider SAT scores for transfer students (there is no place to list it). they will consider the GPA including Fall, but nothing after that fro admissions evaluation.

Get at least 3.5 by the end of fall 2012. They won’t look at yor spring grades for admission

I’m just now afraid that they will deny to read my app,( looking at the gpa I have when I apply ) or reject me before I finish my fall classes…? Do they do that

Are you applying from a a California CC? UCs read all and review all applicants. They will consider all your classes, including those in progress. They will only see (and include) the grades for the coming Fall and all the ones before that, but nothing after until you submit your transcripts.

Yes, I’m applying from California CC. And I hope they will understand and consider, that I just got a C in a biology course which it is not a prerequisite course for media studies / comm. major… that really hurt my gpa: \ I took it not only because it would satisfy for the GE, but also because I thought I was going to do the other major. Or I could’ve better off taken an easier science course. -_- .

Advice is just apply to the most obscure and least impacted major of the Letters and Science school. Berkeley has you choose a major on your app, if it’s a letters and science major (like media studies or english etc) you are accepted into the school, NOT THE MAJOR. You then apply to declare your major once you are at Berkeley.
Note: this is only for L&S majors.

Oh, I see! now I know how this process goes… Thank you for this information.
i just read the L&S requirements on ASSIST.org.
Alright, so I am taking the requirements for L&S major because I want to do media studies.

When I apply to the major, I’ll need to send them the specific college essay in the app right?
I’m not really quite sure how I will apply to declare my major yet, I’ll ask a counselor about that part.

And, Here’s what assist.org said:
The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, and
Foreign Language.

it got me also wondering, do I have to take Foreign language if I speak another language other than English? (I might also need to ask a counselor)
And what is quantitative Reasoning? because I don’t think i’ve heard of it… but i know Reading&Composition is an Enlglish course here in my college, or no?

You actually have to apply to the Media Studies major once your accepted to Cal as a Letters and Sciences applicant. I applied to transfer to Cal as a media Studies Major but upon acceptance i learned i had to apply separately to the Media Studies department. I think this is because it’s an impacted Major. Still it was pretty annoying knowing i’d spent the prior 2 years making sure i did all the pre-requisites only to find out that that even though i got into Cal i wasn’t in Media studies…yet. The application process isn’t that difficult but i think they look mostly at your pre-req grades (specifically any pre-req you take at Cal) and your analytical paper. My pre-req GPA was 3.9

^^It is like that for all majors. Students are just accepted into L&S or whatever college they applied to.

OP- quantitative reasoning is math. If you don’t complete it by the end of this fall, it will look VERY bad. You must complete it by spring, but you should do it earlier. You will apply as a media studies applicant, and write about media studies in your personal statement, but you will only be admitted (or denied) to L&S. During your first fall semester at berkeley you will apply/petition to major in media studies.

Have you been doing any general ed? You should try to complete IGETC instead of Berkeley’s breadth, because it’s not like you are guaranteed into UCB and you should have backup schools. You should get at least one of the english classes completed by the end of fall too, if you don’t, it will look very bad.

I’m curious about the foreign language requirement as well if anyone has an answer.

Rosegray, may i ask you for you stat? You said that you were admitted into CAL media studies right?

A Berkeley insider told me that you HAVE to have a 3.0 just for your application to be looked at. If you have lower than a 3.0, your application will be discarded.

You have a 3.2 - which isn’t terrible but you should definately increase it by taking summer classes (I have a 3.8 transfer GPA/ 3.76 with transferable and non-transferable courses combined. I want to increase my transfer GPA higher since that’s the one they’ll be looking at. I’ll be taking summer classes to do so. You should too.)

Good luck!

Also, Media Studies is a capped major in case you’re wondering. A lot of students apply towards that one and therefore admission is limited. They suggest to have an alternative major in mind.

If we both get into Berkeley, I’ll see you there! haha :D
