Trying to understand Physics Internships

Can those of you with knowledge in this area help me understand whether summer undergraduate internships are important for a physics major? Are some internships more valuable than others? Should some strategy for choosing the "right" internships be followed? Should it change as the student approaches graduation? What role do internships play in getting into a good graduate school?

If a physics major is interested in graduate school, then it is important to have research experience. A physics internship can offer this. Here are some useful links:

Society of Physics Students chapters at colleges and universities maintain their own websites in which they provide advice about getting research experience and applying to graduate school.
