[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Applied for FA, but definitely not going to get any (150k+)
[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Female in Computer Science

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: As I mentioned earlier, my essays were incredible. My interview was also superb, but I think the real take away is that I’m exactly the kind of person (personality wise) that Tufts is looking for. Through my essays and my interview, I was able to convey that.
[
] Weaknesses: My SAT I score was lower than I wanted it to be.
[] Why you think you were accepted: As I said above, I think I’m a great fit personality wise. However, on second thought, I think my slightly lower SAT scores actually worked in my favor. A lot of kids from my high school get into Harvard each year, and so students in general are affected by Tufts Syndrome pretty badly. Seems like Tufts thought that Harvard probably wouldn’t take me, so they decided I was safe to admit-- solid!
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted to Skidmore (w/ Porter Scholarship for Math and Science, merit), Grinnell (w/ Trustee Scholarship, merit), Northeastern (EA), UMass Amherst, and UVM. I was wait listed at MIT, Carleton, and Vassar. Deferred from Brown. Rejected at the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science (no surprise there).

[/ul]**General Comments: **
Today was maybe the best day of my life thus far. Tufts is my dream school, and I’m just so so so SO happy I got in. I’m waiting on Harvard, Brown and Yale tomorrow, but even if I get in to any of those (which, let’s be real-- I probably won’t), Tufts is still at the top of my list. Congrats to everyone else who was accepted, and to those who weren’t, best of luck to you!

11th Grade pre-calc teacher: 8/10; She wrote my other recommendations when I applied for internships (and I got in). I don’t know her as well as my english teacher and I don’t have her as a teacher anymore, but she liked me last year.

[] Additional Rec: n/a
[

It was really easy to talk to her, and because I knew about a lot of the traditions and programs (from sibling and dad), my “Why Tufts” reasons were very (or what I felt) strong.

**General Comments: **
I wasn’t originally going to apply to Tufts, but I fell in love with the blog its Admissions office ran. They seem like a zany bunch and I’m a bit bummed that there’s a high likelihood I won’t be able to meet them and the kids that go to Tufts. Congratulations to those who were accepted! If you weren’t, keep your chin up!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 720 Math, 720 CR 710 W (2150)
ACT: na
SAT II: 750 Math 1, 680 Math 2, 670 Bio (took math 2 and bio 2 years after I was in the class for the material which is why I have lower scores, didn’t submit Math 2)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): no clue
Weighted GPA: 95. 23
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): na
AP (place score in parenthesis): didn’t submit individual scores, but have taken 8 AP’s including senior year
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Euro, AP Statistics, French H, Unified PE, Chamber Singers (H), AP Lit, AP Physics, Madrigals (honors class, an elite acapella class for the 8 top singers in the school)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Honor, American Math Contest winner my sophomore year for my high school, All-Academic Athlete for baseball, Rising Star Award (principal picked 2 students in the high school for the award), 2-time all-conference vocalist, 2-time all-state vocalist

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): “Friends” program (highly active in the program which lets high school students interact with students with disabilities at the school, spent A LOT of time doing it), Project Haiti Co-founder (build a device that helps filter clean water in Haiti), Baseball for four years, National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Tri-M (music) Honor Society, Burns Academy (tutoring), various charity oriented group members
Job/Work Experience: been a paid tutor since 6th grade and been a local little league umpire since I was 12, interned for a state senator one summer
Volunteer/Community service: “Friends” summer camp counselor, volunteer at a local nursing home, volunteer at various local festivals
Summer Activities:
Essays: Wrote my common app essay on the Friends program and my brother’s influence in my life (very well written), and for supplements was very creative and emotional (“why tufts” very compelling as I already know the school really well since my bro went there,
Teacher Recommendation: One from principal, one from AP English teacher, one from AP Calc teacher (all great)
Counselor Rec: Very good since he also was my bro’s counselor so knew me well
Additional Rec: Friends program coordinator wrote a rec for me as well
State:CT (but considered as an international applicant which made it a lot tougher to get in)
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Indian
Gender: M
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): nope
Interview: went great since the girl who interviewed me 1. knew my bro very well since he also went to Tufts 2. actually was from the same high school as me and my bro (ironic to the max?) 3. did literally the same things as I want to do in college

Strengths: definitely my essays and my extra-curriculars
Weaknesses: gpa, the fact that I’m Indian, and having to apply international
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: feel like I’m an all around solid student, and my grades have a significant upward trend…being a legacy might have helped but, at least in my opinion, I think I would have gotten in anyways
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted-Tufts, UNC Chapel Hill, Brandeis University, UCONN Waitlisted-Wake Forest, Babson Denied-Colgate, Amherst, UVA, UMich, Notre Dame Cond. Accepted-Richmond, Lehigh (admitted if I can pay full tuition, lol good joke)
General Comments: Still remember when I stood on top of the Tisch library at Tufts and convinced my brother that this is the school for him…5 years later here I am, admitted to the same school…kind of nostalgic but definitely excited to have been accepted

Reflection

[ul]

[] Strengths: Probably scores, but then my transcripts were littered with B’s since my school marks pretty harshly. Essays maybe.
[
] Weaknesses: Lack of major awards? International olympiad winners and WSDC alumni are the usual takers.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly have no idea. Blessed by God. I was so terrified after all my other rejections. But I got into my #1, Alhamdulillah.
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Smith, MoHo, Rochester, NYU, McGill, KCL.

Disclaimer: If looking at this stresses you out, get off CC and go to the library or go read a book or go watch TV or read a magazine. I’m posting this because I read through threads like this a few times and thought they were interesting, so please don’t use this to worry.

Objective:

  • [] SAT I (breakdown): 770 math, 730 critical reading, 780 English
    [
    ] ACT: 35
    [] SAT II: 750 math 2, 770 literature, 790 biology M
    [
    ] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Weighted 4.74 (I get bored in non-honors/AP classes and my school has very few mandatory non-honors courses, just religion and less than a year of PE required)
    [
    ] Rank: technically unranked, 1/156
[] AP: US History 5, Bio 5, Spanish Culture 3 (I had a medical thing, which I mentioned), English Language 5, World History 5
    [
] IB (place score in parenthesis): LOL
[] Senior Year Course Load: 5 APs, more than anyone else in my class. I dropped a sixth because it was too stressful and I wasn’t enjoying it
    [
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): uhhhh I have bloody tons of Speech and Debate awards, I semifinaled at States last year and only missed finals because of medical stuff. Harvard book thing, the regular testing and honors society stuff (I did it for my friends, if you’re reading this and you have a bunch of ECs you don’t enjoy, please don’t go sign up for everything that exists, it’s not worth it)

Subjective:

  • [] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Speech and Debate (captain 11-12, chair 10), Science Club (VP 11-12, Publicist 10), Math Team (VP 11-12, Publicist 10, I know I’m so original), National Charity League, babysitting, refereeing, Youth Commission (like town council)
    [
] Job/Work Experience: oh oops. Babysitting, refereeing, I was a karate instructor but had to quit
[] Volunteer/Community service: average, it’s not really my thing but I do it so I can spend time with my mom and sisters
    [
    ] Intended Major: undeclared
[] Summer Activities: lots of debate camps, family vacations, a poetry camp (it was godawful), some other stuff I don’t remember
    [
] Essays: clichéd “why Tufts”, though very detailed, 8/10; nice story about my family and valuing them and our relationship (I think), 8/10; I like diversity and being proven wrong, 9/10
[] Teacher Recommendation: English and History, they both love me (lol I think) and I have a really good relationship with my history teacher. One was probably logical and the other was probably emotional, so I got the best of both worlds. Just ask who knows you best, that stuff about needing one from each department is silly
    [
] Counselor Rec: she said I’m really easy to write for and I think I did a really good job on the form she asked me to fill out, I spent a lot of time on it
    [] Additional Rec: uhhh n/a

] Gender: California gurls (I actually hate that song)
    [] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): n/a
    [
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): LOL

Reflection

  • [] Strengths: weirdness, debate/speech/abilities to bullshit, grades/scores don’t really matter but I guess those too
    [
] Weaknesses: I had a 660 in Chemistry from sophomore year which doesn’t really matter but thought I’d mention it, I didn’t spend as long on the essays as I probably should have
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I actually can be pretty funny, regardless of how this post makes me sound. I did things that made me happy for four years and was genuine with the essays- it’s really all about the essays, I think, and not coming across like a robot
    [
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted: W&M (Monroe Scholar), Gonzaga (um their top scholarship, don’t remember the name), Clark (Traina Scholar), Skidmore, Brandeis, Georgetown, Whitman
    waitlisted: Pomona, Wesleyan
deferred: Yale SCEA (did you know their janitor killed a girl and shoved her in the wall of the science lab a few years ago? I was disappointed at first, but now I’m like “missed a bullet” because I wouldn’t have applied to Tufts or a lot of other great schools if I’d gotten in)

**General Comments: Spending a lot of time on CC will do nothing but stress you out. Just go out and do what you love and the colleges that recognize that will be a. the colleges you’ll want to go to, because you’re not just a score to them, and b. colleges that fit your personality and genuinely like you as a person. Don’t take the SAT/ACT more than twice in total, I promise, it doesn’t matter. Don’t apply to more than two safeties. I applied to four and it’s a waste of time/money- they’re safeties for a reason (I didn’t believe my friend when she told me that, and I’m regretting it now)

Also, arrogance. Use that, because you’re awesome. If you want to succeed, it doesn’t matter which college is your trampoline to success (lol my metaphors are deep). To the future "us"s: DO NOT STRESS. Life sucks if you’re not enjoying it, so just have fun O:)
