I know its kinda early for this, but itll be great if we could get some discussion going for potential applicants to Tufts ED for the class of 2021
Am I the only one who still can’t believe it is even time for us to apply? I don’t think it’ll hit me until common app opens August 1st. I have not visited Tufts yet, so I am not sure if I will be applying ED or not, but I am quite interested. There are a few things I am wondering about though.
I have heard that Tufts has a reputation of being predominately Jewish. I am a practicing Catholic and I am a little worried that I won’t fit in as well. Does anyone have any insight on this?
Also, in regards to freshman dorms, I know there are all freshman dorms and some mixed dorms. I feel like I would want to be in an all freshman dorm because at colleges where that is the only option, students really seem to like it. Any current students have anything to say about dorms?
I am so thankful that this website exists as we enter a very stressful time in our lives. It is nice to know that we can all have access to a community that wants to see everyone succeed!
Tufts was founded in 1852 by Protestant Universalists during the second great awakening. Although non-sectarian, there was a Universalist divinity school on Tufts’ campus until 1968 and many of Tufts’ unique cultural attributes and academic philosophies can be traced the core Universalist beliefs in inclusivity, interconnectedness, peace and justice.
In 1960, the Universalists merged with the much larger (and wealthier) Unitarian Church to form the Unitarian-Universalist Church.
The current University Chaplain at Tufts is a Unitarian-Universalist, but there is also a Protestant Chaplain, a Catholic Chaplain, a Bhuddist Chaplain, and a Muslim Chaplain as well as the first university-funded Humanist Chaplain.
For sacred spaces, Tufts has: a Chapel, a Hillel Center, and a Interfaith Center.
In 2007, Tufts’ University Chaplain was a Roman Catholic Priest and about 50% of the students who attended services were Catholic.
Hillel International estimates Tufts’ Jewish community at 24%, which is substantial, but not predominant.
Due to its Universalist roots, the Tufts culture is arguably one of the most inclusive in the country- but you need to make sure that you are comfortable with the liberal philosophies and beliefs that make this degree of inclusiveness possible…
Good Luck!

I am touring Tufts in 2 weeks for the first time but I am thinking I will be applying ED 1. It is a great school and I am applying as an IR major. I really love the Boston area, smaller schools, and older campuses. I am also very liberal and love the inclusiveness that Tufts is known for. I am a very outgoing person though and really don’t want to go to a school where the students are pretentious and think they are somehow better than others due to their academic background. Are Tufts students known to be like that? Is the faculty known to be like that? That’s a big issue for me. Also, is this going to turn into a stats/chance me/results forum? Thanks and best of luck to everyone!
I just returned from my Tufts visit and decided it was not for me. However, based on what I saw, I think it would be perfect for you! The overall vibe seemed to be more outgoing with a very strong emphasis on the idea that “being smart is cool” (they reiterated that fact many times). There is very much a sense of inclusiveness and community there, which is something I liked. However, I was not a huge fan of the older looking campus, but that seems to be right up your alley so I am sure you’ll appreciate what I did not. The faculty was extremely welcoming and the man doing our information session was absolutely hilarious. For me, the fit was just not right. I am not upset though, because I found out later that day the fit is perfect at BC. The Boston area is amazing and I also enjoyed the Davis Square area around Tufts. I hope you love it and best of luck to all of you applying to Tufts this fall!
Thanks so much for your input and response! I think you put it well that what you might not love, I most likely will. So glad to hear you love BC - sounds like a great fit. A fantastic Catholic school with an absolutely stellar academic reputation. Best of luck!
I’m not sure if I’m applying ED I to Tufts, but I visited a couple days ago and thought it was awesome!! The admissions officer I spoke to said that for the Class of 2020, the acceptance rate was 30% for ED I & ED II, as compared to 11% for RD. So it’s something important to keep in mind.
Bumping up this post who else is applying ED?
I am! Surprised this thread isn’t very active. Where’s the other ED-ers at?
I’m so nervous! I will melt into a pile of sadness if I get deferred or rejected from this school ED.
I’m also applying ED! Hoping for the best for everyone
Would anyone be interested in creating a group chat for us ED applicants? It would be great if we could help each other get through this nerve-racking process together! :))
I would join!
