Reflection

Strengths: I am a really quirky person and made sure to write about that.
Weaknesses: Academics

Advice: Tufts is a niche school. Though it is a Liberal Arts college, it looks for students that have a particular passion and devotes themselves to it. If you have something important to you, highlight that. Tufts likes quirks, so having that one passion will set you apart from the other applicants. Also, try to incorporate humor into your essays if you can. Just general college essay advice.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 740 R+W 730 M 1450C
ACT (breakdown): 35E 35M 32R 28S (rip) 33C

IB (place score in parenthesis): I only have predicted scores and no idea if they got sent. HL Bio (6), HL Chem (5), HL Econ (6), HL English A Lang&Lit (6), SL Spanish A Lit (7), SL Math (6)
Senior Year Course Load: ^ rigorous. I regret not taking HL Math though
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none, these are very rare in my country

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
OK I LACK A LOT OF LEADERSHIP, I KNOW. I was never into leadership roles and wanted to be a leader in my own ways. Positions shouldn’t define you.

National music honor society (lead alto saxophone)
Jazz band (lead alto sax)
South American international music festival (lead alto sax)
Writing my online cookbook on Strikingly
Literary magazine and school newspaper (I post my narratives and recipes, does that count as leadership LOL)
Musical theater (part of music ensemble)
Varsity trail running, varsity track and field (I kinda suck and always fall behind)
Co-admin of Facebook fan-pages for my favorite band

Job/Work Experience: none
Volunteer/Community service:
Make a wish (fundraising),
fundraising and introducing music and the arts to children in a local orphanage
Summer Activities: I went to Antarctica in February to snow climb and took shots of penguins and stuff (I live in the southern hemisphere so summer here is Dec-Feb), trail running, cultural trip to China and Colombia, lots of traveling

Rate out of 10
Essays: 9–Common App was great. I grew up with two clashing cultures (Chile-China) in a country where diversity and open-mindedness are not the norm. Wrote about my skepticism towards ignorance and inflexibility. My favorite band is a Japanese goth metal band and I wrote about using the Internet to make a community of online friends who share my passion for strange music and making music covers to post online, hoping our band members would notice us .

The supplements were just OK. Really focused on music and wanting to be in an openminded community, especially since people tend to be judgmental in my country.

Teacher Recommendation: (Chemistry, English) I wasn’t allowed to read them, I’d say average/generic. I love both teachers but my English teacher had to write 20+ recs.
Counselor Rec: no clue
Additional Rec: none
Interview: 8, an hour long.
Other: submitted two music supplement videos. One on the saxophone, the other on bass guitar. Also sent my regional AO an update email in mid-February with activities I had accomplished after submitting my application, which he added to my file.

Applied for Financial Aid?: no
Intended Major: double major music and economics, but I actually thought about music with CS instead
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): Chile
School Type: international, private, large
Ethnicity: Hispanic/Latino, racially Chinese
Gender: F
Income Bracket: high
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Additional Comments:
I got admitted to Penn yesterday (totally wasn’t expecting that) and I’m quite conflicted about which school to commit to now. Argh! Both schools are awesome and so different from each other!
Also, when people say that test scores aren’t everything, believe it. But if you know you can score better, absolutely do your best to get a higher score. Admissions are extremely competitive now and you want to make sure you do everything you can. After getting waitlisted by NYU, I really thought I was gonna have to commit to my safe school before yesterday…what a miracle.

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): -
ACT (breakdown): 33 (34 English, 31 Math, 32 Reading, 34 Science)
SAT II: 760 US History
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): GPA is done weird at my school, but around a 3.9
Weighted GPA: Around a 4.3 probably
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 3/487
AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 US History, 5 AP English Language, 3 AP Physics 1
IB (place score in parenthesis): -
Senior Year Course Load: AP Human Geography, AP Literature, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Psychology, Anatomy Honors
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Scholastic Art and Writing Silver Key, NJ Governor’s School Scholar – rest are usual ones like AP Merit Scholar, National Honor Society, etc

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
-Played Vibraphone (Captain) and Marimba in School’s Marching Band/Indoor Percussion Ensemble
-Played Vibes and Guitar in Jazz Band
-Poetry Club (Vice President) / Editor of Literary Magazine
-Allied Health Academy / Health Careers Club
Job/Work Experience: none
Volunteer/Community service:

  • A little over 100 hours volunteering at a local hospital
    Summer Activities:
  • Other than volunteering, not much – I did an internship at an infectious diseases clinic

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App: 7/10, was about the neuroscience research I did over the summer, and how I wanted to combine that with my passion for political science – like how we need more people from medicine in our political sphere to create better and more varied discourse. This wasn’t the final draft that I sent to some other colleges and was more sterile than the rest of the writing on my app
Why Tufts? Supplement: 8/10. Talked about how getting called Jumbo for four years might be silly, but because of how great their Community Health program was, it was worth it – my attempt at being cute lol
Let Your Life Speak: 8/10. Talked about how my family is really fragmented and dysfunctional, but when my sister comes into town we mold back together, and how that’s taught me to enjoy small moments – really corny but still cute aw
Supplement about Creating Something: 10/10. Talked about how the front ensemble in our marching band/indoor percussion ensemble creates both a musical and visual “mosaic”

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 10/10. From my physics teacher and NHS advisor about how passionate I am about learning, cracked a lot of jokes
Teacher Rec #2: 10/10. From my history teacher and emphasized interdisciplinary learning a lot
Counselor Rec: Didn’t read it, but me and him got close during my juinor year, so I’m sure it was good!
Additional Rec: From my percussion teacher. Didn’t read it, but I’m sure it was also really good!
Interview: Didn’t request one.

Reflection

Strengths: Writing, Recs
Weaknesses: Not a ton of extra curriculars, or leadership positions. Should of had more impressive objective stuff to make up for it
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I fit in at Tufts enough to get waitlisted, but I guess there wasn’t enough to justify me being accepted right off the bat!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Northeastern Honors, Johns Hopkins, and my safeties. Waitlisted at Cornell and NYU. Rejected at Dartmouth, UPenn, and Princeton.

General Comments:
My college application process was really fun, and I’m glad it ended with my Tufts decision, even if it wasn’t an acceptance. I wish I had the foresight to cater my high school experience to college applications, but I still had fun writing and reflecting on it in my application. I wish I got more involved in the few academic clubs that are at my school, but nonetheless, it was still real!

Decision: Accepted

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Waived FERPA so no way of knowing.
Teacher Rec #1: Assume it was great - Latin teacher of 4 years, very close relationship and my son sees him as a mentor more than a teacher
Teacher Rec #2: Assume it was great - Precalc and AP CS teacher, she knows DS really well and can vouch for his passion and curiosity as well as his compassion toward others and willingness to spend his free time tutoring kids outside of the peer tutor program.
Counselor Rec: Assume it was AWESOME! She interviewed faculty, admin, coaches, etc, to get quotes for her letter and I’m guessing bc DS is well regarded that it was extremely favorable.
Additional Rec:
Interview: Not sure if he got one…

Reflection Feels kind of bad bc Tufts was high on his list and he never thought he had a chance to get into Yale, but he did. He went in pretty sure he would get into Tufts, though, and if Yale hadn’t worked out, he would most likely be attending Tufts.

Strengths: Strong recs, strong ECs, really strong stats and URM
Weaknesses: Needed substantial aid
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: He was a really strong applicant and his GC has a really good relationship with Tufts. She was positive he would get in.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted - Yale (most likely to attend), Boston College, WPI, UDelaware Honors, Colby College, Hamilton College
Rejected - MIT (after deferral from EA), Princeton

General Comments: Always be yourself. My son got admitted to almost all the colleges to which he applied because he stood out as a compassionate leader and role model at his school. He also did everything at 100%, no cutting corners. I think his work ethic and his ability to lead others with kindness and respect is what made the difference. He just spent four years working hard and being himself, not what he thought colleges were looking for. Many times, I advised him to do something differently bc it might hurt his chances of getting into X, Y, or Z college, and he said, “But Mom, I’m not doing it to get into college, I’m doing it because I love it.” So stick to who you are and you will end up at the perfect college for you

DECISON : REJECTED

Advanced Physics F1 Thermodynamics/Electricity : 10/10 (equivalent to A* for A levels)
Romanian Literature and Language : 9.25/10 (equivalent to A for A levels)

Subjective:
• Interviews:n/a
• Essays: I’ve put a lot of effort in the essays but still , they were the worst part of my application. I am terrible at essays so they were quite cringe.
• Physics Rec: The prof liked me and did a good job but it was not something outstanding 7/10.
• Geography Rec: The prof loves me. She allways says that I am the best student she has ever met. The rec was 10/10.
• Personal/Extracurricular Rec:
• Principal/Counselor Rec: I am very close to the principal and he said that I was one of the best students the school had. The rec was the best out of all the three since his writing is very good and he liked me 10/10.
• Sports (if any):I did swimming but never excelled at it since my goal was just to stay fit.
• Instruments (if any): I’ve played the mandolin but never really enjoyed it.
• Other ECs (if any): I’ve participated at the national olympiad of geography 4 years in a row during highschool and managed to take the 2nd place (11th year) and 8th place (12th year). I have also qualified to the inernational preliminaries for the international geography olympiad and made it to the last stage but never got to the internationals.
During my 12th year I have qualified for an advanced math club organised at the county level.
In 9th and 10th year I’ve been to netherlands for 2 exchange projects.
I’ve helped the local comunity by building and restoring certain buldings and parks in the city and helped at a local eldery asylum .
I’ve assisted the organisation of two summer camps.
Income bracket: $15k
• Hook:

Location/Person:
• State or Country: Romania
• Current School Type: Emanuel High School (a top 3 high school at county level and top 30 in the country)
• Ethnicity: White
• Gender: Male
• Grade Applying For:
• Age:18
• Financial Aid/Full Pay: Applied and needed full or almost full financial aid.

Strengths: Math and Physics test scores, National olympic for 4 years.

Weaknesses: ESSAYS + I need a lot of financial aid

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted? I am horrible at writing essays and my overall SAT scores were small because of ebrw (that section gave me trauma).

(End)

General Comment: At least I got a fee waiver so I’ve just wasted my time.
