Tufts or USC more respected?

I see that USC is ranked 26 and Tufts is ranked 28 in this year's USNWR. But, at least in my high school (international), Tufts is A LOT harder to get in than USC.

I am asking this because I wonder if I should apply to Tufts for ED II (in which I have to go if I get admitted).

IMHO, Tufts has much more intellectual and academic gravitas, a much better track record for grad. school acceptance, smarter kids, and a less partying sensibility than USC.

USC, however, has better football (cause Tufts has none–ha, ha, ha!).

Lose the “how respected” is my prospective school mantra and make a match based on things that matter–location, student body size, access to faculty, etc.

I don’t think you should look at it that way. It is an east coast/west coast thing. If you want to live and work on the west coast, you should go to USC. Likewise, if you want to live/work on the east coast, then go to Tufts. If you want to return to your home country, you have to judge the prestige in your home country, and whether you hope to do business with people on the east or west coast.

USC also has one of the best alumni connections

I cannot express how much this overreliance on a one-size-fits-all ranking made me cringe.

If you like Tufts better, apply. Both have great reputations. Tufts has traditionally held a better reputation in the liberal arts while USC excels in pre-professional fields, but they are mostly on equal footing these days.

Yes both have really great reputations. Both also have access to great cities: Boston, Los Angeles. Overall USC is very well known academically and athletics, it has the largest international population for USA colleges as well.

For clarification, that’s in raw numbers.

On a percentage basis, it falls behind IIT (IL), MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Harvard, and Stanford (in that order).

As someone said earlier, USC on west coast, Tufts on East Coast. The culture at the different schools is pretty different as well.

Neither USC nor Tufts is very respected.

One games the rankings and the other has, well, Tufts Syndrome.

Some schools (read: WUSTL) both game the rankings and have Tufts Syndrome.

haha what is tufts syndrome?

and is the ‘coast’ that my college is located in really a huge determinator of where I will end up working in the future?

Which LACs, excluding Ivies, do not have this syndrome?

LACs are not Ivies. HTH.

Really?

If that is true then how come USC grads don’t even make as much as Tufts grads do after a few years from leaving their alma mater school.

Agree with gumpster & sfgiants.

To those on the east coast, Tufts is the “more respected.” To those on the west coast, Tufts is barely known. The culture (as well as the climate) are significantly different.

Interestingguy, I will rephrase: Which LACs do not have this syndrome?

I respect your POV and would really like to hear your opinion.

I’d go with USC as I love California and LA is amazing. But internationally, I believe Tufts is more respected than USC is. It’s easy to get into USC if you’re international and you have money to pay full fees.

Tufts, USC and WUSTL are not LACs. HTH.

just wondering, is USC smack center of the city? is the crime rate really high on campus? how are its academics, specifically for science majors? [possibly premed]

im trying really hard to convince my parents to let me apply at the moment- but first i need to convince myself LOL

RML, your anti-USC bias is pretty blatant here. The same salary statistics you use to question USC’s alumni network show USC grads, on average, have significantly higher starting salaries than Tufts grads. You’re just cherry picking among already unreliable statistics.

USC starting median salary - $54,600
Tufts starting median salary - $48,200
