Tufts RD - Should I request an interview?

I'm curious what your thoughts are on the optional Tufts interview. We have up until January 8th to request one.

Do you think it's important to request an interview? Do you think applicants who don't request an interview are at a disadvantage? Why or why not?

Personally, Tufts is my second or third choice school. Getting accepted is very important to me, and I think I have a decent shot of getting in, interview or not. I'm leaning towards not requesting one because I know enough about the school, and my performance at interviews is definitely not exceptional, so I doubt it would get me accepted if I were otherwise going to be denied.

Thoughts?

I think that you should read up on Tufts Syndrome. You are not guaranteed into Tufts and if it is your second or third choice school, it very well may show in an interview.

Well taking them at their word, it is not important:

And this was stressed ad nauseum at the admissions presentation we went to (the nauseum part being a theme in the presentation).

My Daughter is in your situation exactly- deferred from Brown ED (like everyone else in the universe), interested in CS, and Tufts is a strong second or third. So strong in fact she may switch to EDII. She has not yet requested an interview but she probably will because we are local and we missed a few important admissions events earlier in the cycle.

But honestly, you have probably read here and elsewhere (especially the Brown board) that an alumni interviewer’s recommendation carries almost no weight at all. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Not being interviewed will have no effect on your chamces.

I personally think it’s a good idea, because there’s many aspects of someone’s personality that don’t come off in an application. I’m in a similar boat- I like tufts and it is probably my second choice. I requested an interview because I know how strongly they value personal character. That being said, if interviews are not your strong suit, I doubt it’s a big deal.

For now I’m still undecided. I think once I finish all my other apps I’ll have a easier time making the decision.

My s was in your position last year. He was deferred from brown ED and applied to tufts ED2. He did request an interview and really enjoyed meeting the tufts alum. She wrote him a wonderful email when she learned he’d been accepted. I think it’s worth using every tool at your disposal to get across your interest in a school, especially if you’re not applying ED/ED2/EA.
